That's why Spencer is so important. Everyone knows that this is true (in fact, I'd argue that an inferiority complex in the face of history drives much of anti-white activism) but no one is willing to say it. Spencer is the definition of a dissident intellectual - he's willing to push the boundaries of acceptable speech in a way that is articulate from a messanger who projects confidence and power (Spencer is handsome and extremely well educated) in a way that the Nazi LARPers of WN 1.0 never could.
Look at the youtube comments on this video: everyone notices that the interview is highly edited and that the interviewer was unable to come to an effective counteragrument.

Yeah, I think that Spencer understands his usefulness to the movement is limited. He's not the right fit for political leadership (his public speeches have gotten better, but still leave a lot to be desired) but he is able to make the most out of what he is good at: challenging the left's sacred cows in a way that "awakens" young white men. Recruitment is our most important objective.
Spencer was a flawed catalyst, he peeked at hailgate. Overall, he is a massive positive force in the USA, and indeed the struggle as a whole, but he needs to own up to his mistakes, Altright.com being an important one, and his partnership with that Friberg fraud another.

Charlottesville was a massive sucess in pushing cultural issues to the forefront of American politics: debate over "monuments" (really the future of white America) exploded, Trump took a stand and countersignaled the mainstream narrative about "Nazis," and the kneeling protests resumed (which is another massive sucess in waking white Americans up to identity politics).
His speaking tour is also laying the legal groundwork for future alt-right activists. Anti-white activists and cuckservatives are dramatically overplaying their hands and disregarding the law: Spencer has won several major legal victories that guarentee his (and future figures') right to speak and - more importantly - recieve government protection from the usual leftist mobs that shut down these events.
Hailgate doesn't matter and never mattered. It happened after the election and didn't change anyone's mind about Spencer or white nationalism. It was basically media bait to get more coverage for the alt-right's ideas and it worked.

The crackdown was already coming, that's like blaming the enemy invasion on your own troop build-up to repel what you knew was coming. Confrontation is essential, and there is never a perfect situation in which to do it. You cannot sit back and let the enemy move freely just because you are not perfectly prepared. The statues were always going to get torn down, the media was always going to smear anyone who fought back in any way.
