It works reasonably well but a big reason for that is that basically anyone who isn't working class (and even a lot who are) has private health insurance and gets treated at private hospitals. This means that our public hospitals don't get as fucked - at least in the less populated areas. A lot of hospitals in the inner areas of Sydney or Melbourne will be terribly overcrowded and understaffed.

It's steadily becoming worse and worse though. The amount of nurses who can't speak English is disturbingly high. The amount of nurses and doctors breaking incredibly simple and obvious practices is horrifying - as an example, I recently got some blood drawn in hospital. The registered nurse (asian of some kind) applied the alcohol swab to my arm, as you do, but then blew on it immediately. She seemed legitimately confused as to why I wanted her to re-apply the alcohol, but I finally got her to do it. Then she blew on it again. Managed to get the doctor to come in and I explained to him that she is repeatedly blowing on the area she is sterilizing with alcohol swabs. The (Indian) doctor at least understood my English, but didn't seem to know why her blowing on it was a problem. They eventually did it properly, but acted like I was the one being unreasonable. As soon as I got home I got private health insurance, because if they're fucking up such a simple fucking procedure like drawing blood, there is no goddamn way I am letting my life be in their hands.

Part of the problem is that nurses and registered nurses get paid fuck all, so very few Australian-Raised people do it. Similarly, doctors in the private healthcare industry get paid better and have easier workloads, so all the good (read: Australian) ones are there.

In a few years time, I can imagine our public healthcare will be absolute shit-tier.
