Hitler did it because his goal in WW2 was territorial expansion to the east. Western europe he invaded defensively, so the english and americans couldn't establish a beachhead, but Eastern Europe and Asia he intended to kill anyone that wasn't german and expand the German nation.

Fortifications are monuments to the stupidity of man. Also, stalin was less than 2 weeks being ready to launch his invasion of europe. If he hadn't forward deployed his troops for an invasion they would not have been so easily encircled by the germans.

I am remiss of a time long ago on world of Warcraft, in the lvl 10-19 battlegrounds bracket. I had a twinked lvl 19 warrior, it had all the best gear possible. This was before they integrated the battlegrounds into multi server instances. The games would never start, so I would personally put together the teams. I would type /who all 10-14 for my faction, and send tells to levels 10, 11, 12 and 13 and ask them to queue for warsong gulch battlegrounds. I would log in to a character on the other faction and type /who all 18-19, and send many tells asking the people at the higher end of the bracket to queue.
I did this mostly because I didn't want to just absolutely slaughter low level scum and get then to quit. Well my team ended up losing the game even if I did top the leaderboard and take a couple with me before they would kill me. Hitler had a high k/d and he certainly had the best soldiers but he was outnumbered, just as I was outnumbered because level 10s can't do shit to lvl 19s.

At that point the prussian/german military doctrine had been one of mobile offensive warfare for 200 years and it had been proven succesful time and time again with the latest example being the Blitzkrieg. On the other hand taking a defensive position always means being passive and having to react the your opponent as you could see with the ''impenetrable'' Maginot line wich fell in a week.
