I know the Parisians hate speaking English. They are the center of the western world culturally, and get their knickers in a huge ball when people come visit and don't bother to learn French first.

From what I recall, once you get out of Paris, the French are quite nice and friendly. And they hate the Parisians for being so stuck up their own ass as well.

I live in Bretagne, the most western region of France. We're usually cold at first, but not in a stuck up way, just a mefiant stance. When you get to know us slightly (or you just get drunk with us) we're pretty nice people, usually.

Rapefugees definitely made things worse though. People are much sadder than they used to, they're angrier, not as much fun. Getting drunk has always been a big thing in our region, but it's slowly becoming even bigger. People want to forget about how shitty their lives have become.

They don't realize forgetting about it doesn't make it disappear, but that's another story.

It's pretty bizarre. I've been to France a dozen times and it is very common. I speak a bit of French, but not enough to converse well at all. When you speak English they often look at you with some level of contempt, but you know that they know it.
