I moved from upstate NY a few years ago and even though I could swap it out with a pistol grip, I was being proactive for what I see them doing in the future so I left the original grips on.
If you're referring to the new proposed law allows a judge to grant police to just take a citizen's guns away on a whim, without notifying the owner, then I suspect there will be a lot of gun fights in California, especially if the police treat every gun confiscation like a SWAT event.

Indiana has a law which specifically addresses police entering your property without a warrant. You're free to shoot them. lul needless to say they've stopped no knock warrants since the law passed
Technically to be an assault rifle it needs to be a select fire weapon. AR-15's in the default civilian configuration are semi-auto only, so they cannot be assault rifles.
