She becomes as generic as a star team player of (your favorite team sport). FFT is a team game where the parts make up the sum. The possibility of her permanent demise becomes a real threat that you have to account for in live battle, or else you lose your star player and your entire struggle becomes harder.
In a story sense, she loses meaning. In a gameplay and personal narrative sense of you undergoing this video game like your personal adventure, she becomes a special person you keep in your thoughts and holds more personal meaning to you than any made up meaning that could be ascribed by a video game writer.

Don't forget that story isn't the only reason you like a character in a game. I think a lot of players (who weren't already familiar with the game) ended up in a situation where Agrias was always saving their bacon for a long section of the game. It's pretty common for people to lean on strong units in this genre.
Also, Iskandar was wrong. People do like stoic knights and self-sacrifice. At least, some people.
