Hitler's first plan was to relocate the jews to Madagascar. This plan was highly dependend on a German victory over Britain in 1940, because Germany needed the British Navy (by far the biggest in the world) to relocate the jews. After the Luftwaffe wasn't able to destroy the RAF the plans for Operation Sea lion (the invasion of Britain) were dropped and Hitler decided to go after the Soviet Union (his main target). The problem was that there were so many Jews in the Soviet Union who were considered as enemies of the Reich (remember the Jewish World Congress declared war on Germany in 1933) that they weren't able to put them in concentration camps and feed them, so they decided to shoot them (Einsatzgruppen). Then it was decided that the process of shooting, especially women and children, was to stressfull for the SS units and they (Himmler and Heydrich) came up with the idea of 'Death camps', Zyklon B and ovens.
I believe that Einsatzgruppen did killed jews in mass in their invasion of the communist nation, I do not believe in the factories of death meme.
I can easily imagine the SS guys shooting jews in mass, and putting them in mass graves all while they invade Russia. I do believe that happened and it was criminal and barbaric, but it was no fucking way close to 6.000.000, I don't even believe a million civil jews died in the war.

Hitler gave Himmler special rights for operation in the Soviet Union on March 13th 1941. This order has a sentence in it that basically says 'The Reichsfüher-SS acts on his own behalve and is responsible for his actions in the Soviet Union, he also has to make sure that his actions don't intervere with ongoing Wehrmacht operations.' The whole order is just 4 sentences long and is typically written in a very general/unspecific language. That was the order for the Einsatzgruppen to kill Jews/communist politicians/... . The final solution order was never officially given by Hitler. We have a document by Göring from the Summer of 1941 that uses this term and orders Heydrich to come up with plans --> Wannsee Conference.
If you want to know more about the Einsatzgruppen stuff, google Generalquartiermeister Wagner, he was the Wermacht officer who negotiated the terms with the SS for the Einsatzgruppen, he was later killed because he was a member of the 20.Juli 1944 plot to kill Hitler.
