As a guitarist, my theory as to why rock has petered out is that the six-string electric guitar has perhaps been worked to its full capacity. Jimmy Page, John Petrucci, Randy Rhoads, Van Halen, Steve Vai and co. literally took the instrument as far as it could go. It only has so many strings and so many frets to work with. I hope I'm wrong, and some other guitar heroes step up, but it's the most likely explanation.
