The neural net that makes these pictures is one example of why general AI will shatter our current scheme of society - pictures and videos will no longer be automatically "true". NNs can build novel faces from the ground up, or alter a picture by any imaginable metric to generate a new one.
In OP, for example, the NN learns the age, race, and gender of sample photos, and is then able to change any of these traits (i.e. race) in an existing photo. The result is a new picture which is (superficially) almost impossible for humans to identify as fake, because that particular NN was trained to categorize raw visual input into higher-order traits the same way we do. I am unironically terrified of what these will be capable of even 2-3 years from now.
