SZS is literally a masterpiece. One of the best anime of the modern era.
SHAFT will never achieve the same brilliance again. It was made at that sweet spot where they were still hungry enough and creative enough to make something truly brilliant with the talent they had. Now all that is left is a corpse.

Best SHAFT OP is Maria Holic in terms of stylistic animation I think.
I like how they adapted to Kumeta's style, like using these panning shots for pages when the characters spanned across multiple panels.

I have to say the clearly did a much better job than PA with Uchouten Kazoku of adapting his designs and still keeping their essence regardless of how dependent they have become on that Watanabe style nowadays.

The designs they used for Uchouten Kazoku fit the show very very well though. Kumeta's designs were ok for book covers, but really it's best that they changed it for animation. His designs still had a strong influence in the ones they used, and they turned out great, so it's the best of both worlds.

The Bangaichi version of Ringo Mogire Beam is pretty tough competition
I'm more partial to Ringo, not to mention that for Bangaichi they used the full version of the song and it's even more choke full of references and inside jokes

The only talent they have left is Oishi and Takeuchi. Oishi was screwed for half a decade and Takeuchi is underutilized, it's a shame.
I don't see anything wrong with this. Shaft is at its best when it goes for style over substance.
The heavy handed approach they started using after 2009 was the cancer that killed the studio.
