The Christmas episode was nice. She just doesn't get nearly as much screen time as I wished. On the other hand, it's good that Hidamari doesn't suffer from cast bloat because Ume never went down that road.

She has appeared in the manga only a handful of times, so it's not surprising that her character is sort of simple. She had much more screentime in the anime, but there they based her on the one or two chapters where she had appeared, so she ended up being "S-S-SAE!" since that was what the chapters were about.
