Plenty of ninja do it. Take Lee for example and he can't even use ninjutsu so you're automatically even starting out better than him.

The most important thing for a ninja is strategy and anybody can succeed with enough of that alone even if you're extremely average like Shadow boy. All you need is good teamwork and friends for the most part. If you think about it a little beginner ninja can take out Kakashi if he used enough strategy like poison taking somebody he loves as a hostage etc.

He was right though. All the skilled ninja are either related to each other or trained by each other. The Hokage is an oligarchy of very few ninja who are heavily connected to each other. Even Naruto who is the son of the 4th Hokage, his first sensei was the 4th's student, his master was taught by the 3rd and personally trained the 4th, his mother was an Uzumaki woman, her ancestor the wife of the first hokage. He had all the makings of a Hokage from the get go, but the show treats him like some under-dog. It's dumb.

Lee and Gai are extreme cases. It can be argued they are actually very talented in taijustu but not in ninjutsu. Either way the series threw away that concept of hardwork vs genius and nenji was correct to an extent, destiny had big plans for naruto and only he could achieve them due to heritage (and plot)

Pretty much all the characters in this series have a weakness even if that includes their friends and in my opinion a healthy Orochimaru would be one of the toughest/scariest characters to deal with just because of how cunning he and and the lengths he's willing to go to bring you down which is enough alone but then you take into account he's actually pretty strong and his huge diversity of ninjutsu. You would literally never feel safe.

Plus he just looks scary and has one of the coolest themes.
