If you wanted to use it as a euphemism for almost being dead, then you shouldn't have included 'face' because that implies he's had to face his peers in a court of law. It would've been better to just say he's "on death row", but that's still incredibly ambiguous.
A better way of saying things would've been, "He's on death's doorstep"; implying he's visiting death and may not come back.
