Sangatsu does not have good visual direction. It may be pretty, but it is not necessarily good. Several shots are useless. Serve more to beautify the scene than to help the narrative.

If you're talking about pretentious abstract backgrounds the characters pay no notice none. It's just a pretty frame to distract you from the show it doesn't add to it.

If it makes the show more aesthetic or even manages to create a certain mood I do think it adds something to the show.

I don't see visual direction as a separate entity. Cinematography is in charge of visual communication. It can be as symbolic or literal as possible and it would still be part of the visual direction. It can be masterfully or poorly done, but it's still cinematography.
