WW2 was not a war for le evil racist Hitler against minorities. It was a complex geopolitical conflict where it made sense to get a strong ally in the Pacific to threaten UK's interests in the area and hopefully get someone to lock some of the USA's eventual power there, away from Europe.

Japan was just completely surrounded on all sides by enemies and needed any ally it could get
They both opposed communism and democracy
They also backstabbed each other the whole time. In the japan russia border battles, germany declared itself neutral and pushed the japs to make peace. Then when germany fought russia, japan returned the favor and left them hanging
