New wave triggered the fuck out of cultural Marxist critics back in the day. It was an exclusively white, mainly European movement that was degenerate but espoused themes that white people could relate to from a purely white cultural reference. They hated that you could be a white man in a white city, listening to a white band, talking about white issues. Even though what they preached was antithetical to a healthy society, the new wave was looked down upon because (((they))) had lost control of the narrative. One of the reasons people are conditioned to hate 80s music is because of this.
Punk started as a white movement but critics liked it on a human level before realizing its implications. When they did, they coopted it pretty quickly (see the turn of Jello Biafra, Henry Rollins, etc)
There's a book about The Police that talks about this from a lefty perspective, forget what it's called.

Not much more so than the 70s were. There's a myth that the 80s were the party decade or that drug use was especially common in the 60s compared to later years. Those are just lazy, mythical classifications.
In the 60s the vast majority of people were conservative, Christian, and nationalistic. A small but influential group of hippies took command of the cultural direction, but most people wouldn't have ever realized it unless they watched some documentary on the 60s. Read some work by rock critics and talk to actual hippies and you'll get an accurate picture of the era.
