Polls are usually pretty good, people are just shocked because they can't understand that it is dynamic.
For example, it was pretty clear the UK was going to vote Brexit. The polls at the end were very close, or in favour of Brexit. You also need to keep in mind there is usually a less motivated side in debates. The remain side thought they had it in the bag, and everyone thought they would win easily so a lot of people never bothered to vote.
The same thing happaned with Trump's election, I knew he'd win because polls were going his way. He was leading in all the states he needed to win, and he was showing up winning in some polls in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania so to assume one of these states would go to Trump is not outlandish. That said, US elections are harder to predict because the electoral college can make things much much more dynamic.

The US government spends about $4500 per person on healthcare, this is JUST the government. The present system is very broken, and it leaves the poor with good healthcare while the middle class gets extremely stiffled while they end up paying for it.
The cost per capita of healthcare is roughly $9000 in the United States, but it varies from state to state. The price is almost always rising significantly. The issue with healthcare in the US is that states which refuse to expand medicaid which would remove poor people from the private system have seen their insurance premiums skyrocket. Whereas the states(which tend to be blue) have not seen their premiums rise as rapidly because poor people aren't part of their premium pool.
Another significant fault in the US healthcare system is that the insurance companies which offer coverage are separate from the institutions which provide the services. Meaning that there is no real incentive for a hospital to cut costs so they prefer to charge as much as they can regardless of the service. There are some providers which are connected to their insurance branch, such as Intermountain Healthcare which has meant that healthcare expenditures where they operate are significantly lower.
Now, however the subsidies which were applied to all health insurance rates have been removed which has lead to a drastic increase in premiums.

You can see a liberal state like Masschaussets has seen premiums go from $268 to $336 which is about a 25% increase from 2014 to 2018. The average long-term rate is 5.37% per annum, so this isn't exactly an obscene increase as recent healthcare inflation levels have been closer to 7%. So it is very well possible that Massachussets has "lower" premiums than they did before Obamacare.
All the prices went up here in Alberta when they did that. Not by much, not even enough to notice for most people. But if you ordered the same meal everyday at the same place, or bought the same thing every week or shit, and paid with cash, then you'd notice.

It's similar to how the price of losses from shoplifters is absorbed by those who pay in stores.
When we look at KFF's data for health insurance in red states, for example in Nebraska where the premium was $249 it has risen to $767. This is directly linked to the fact that people are paying for those who shouldn't be in the system, and people who could have afforded healthcare no longer can so the system ends up spirlling out of control and more and more uninsured people take from the system without paying.
We are comparing Massachussets rises, which were ~6.25% per annum which is quite similar to the ACTUAL rises in healthcare costs, compared to the Republican policy which has meant that there has been increases of nearly ~52% year over year since 2014. This is directly tied to their refusal to expand Medicaid.
