Let's look at it from the other side of things - What if ISPs decided internet gaming shouldn't have any place in the world? Or in other words, isn't a productive use of our time and energy. So they constrict data flow so much you can't play a game online anymore.

Google realizes a conservative administration wants to remove regulation, number crunched to see how much it would cost to pay them off, and realized they can take the hit as the expense is not a burden upon them, but the consumers. Hence the reason there's radio silence from all major companies this time around
It's not a private product. It's leveraging insurance entities and their assets which are in fact privately held companies.
