It feels strange that the entirety of 2017 being as good as 2016 or not will depend on this getting or not an Oscar.

I'd say it has a better chance than most years. The only good animated films out this year were Zootopia, Kubo and possibly Moana. Everything else was either mediocre or garbage.
Finding Dory is not getting an Oscar. It's a mediocre sequel. It's far more likely Zootopia will be getting it, and that's because after Disney cannibalized Pixar for their animation team Dismey movies have gone up while Pixar movies have gone to shit.

It better not because they fucked up majorly. First 50-60 minutes were perfection but after that the the pacing and decision making both fall off hard. I wish they'd just remake the last 30-40 minutes entirely and make different decisions, then the film would deserve to even win best picture. But they way it is it simply has too many flaws. Its one of those movies that you can only enjoy a if you a) only watch it once and b) dont think too much about it. And I think if you want to nippon film to win jackshit at the Oscars then this can neither be nor should be the case.

I think it was overhyped for me. I had people telling me to bring tissues and that it was a real emotional rollercoaster, so I ended up expecting way more than I got.

Had to leave the theatre to take a piss halfway through so I missed some of the screentime first round; moreover from about the 30 minute mark up to that point I was distracted by the tortured screams of my bladder.
Protip: don't drink a liter of soda before attending a movie.
It was a nice little story but it wasn't great. The film committed a grievously bad error by having not enough bodyswap scenes.
No one will be talking about this in a month. Meanwhile garden of words gets eternal praise because footfags.

The only way it will have a lasting influence is just due to the visuals, which are the same as shinkai's other works. The actual story and plot really isn't memorable in any way. That's why my complaint about not enough bodyswapping is relevant, because that's why people saw the movie and were interested in it.
That's all an animated movie needs to be lasting honestly. It's not like the plot is the strongest part of a Ghibli movie.
To an extent that's true, but ghibli's movies have the advantage of being interesting to watch, even if the plots are weak. Your Name looks fantastic, but even that gets old after a while. That's why I think they should have included more bodyswapping, since those moments were the most enjoyable parts of the movie.

Honestly it was pretty good. Fantastic animation and strong start but it started getting rocky about 60% the way in. So many times I thought they'd hit the climax and the film would wind down to the finish but it just keep going and going.
Watched it last night and I'll be going again next week. They just added like 7 extra screenings over next week at my cinema, which is surprising for an anime film. Shit's really popular.
