Can someone explain to me why so many fags like the king? I just found him to be a fairly boring bad guy who deserves nothing but death for his actions. kinda hard to feel sympathy for his forced sappy romance when he's a mass murderer who got what he deserved.

For me it's that he was self-aware.

Throughout the arc he begins to doubt himself and tries to communicate with and understand the humans. With Komugi he learns self control and that fear is a petty way to try to rule. Near the end, he begins to realize that maybe he was in the wrong all along, and that the humans were simply counterattacking in desperation, but he went too far to be forgiven so he accepts death.

Just felt like he went through actual growth.

He was literally born to murder, though. Him overcoming that and loving a human was beautiful character development.

The point of them being apex predators is made, though. Aren't we mass murderers the way we keep cows, pigs and chicken then eat them? They were far superior to even the Hunters. What Meruem said about countries, leaders, and human conflict was right. He was a villain who was right, but went about everything the wrong way.

Killua is a mass murderer too. Killed way more people than Meruem ever did actually.
