Seeing this, I think that "claw/scratch marks" branded on Kayou's neck previously were actually the ends of kitsune tails. Maybe her body has a full fox tatoo/brand of some kind under the kimono.

It's funny, kitsune!Kayou isn't actually fox-shaped like Ayaka's familiar, she's still humanoid and just forced to her knees by the sudden increase of 20ft of bulk and size.
Also, as an added thought to this, it makes sense why no one would up and tell Honoka how Komachi got her scar, and what/'who' gave it to her.

And Honoka finally uses his own magic for the first time. If this was something he learned a while back and remembered as an afterthought, makes you wonder what else he can do.
I wonder if that power reflecting in his eyes is what Shiori and Kazane saw when he was a tyke that clued them in to him inheriting Kazane's blood.

If nothing else, all these long flashback arcs have established why Ayaka is so devoted to him. And how much it must have sucked when he forget everything (although she did too).
Come to think of it, since present day Honoka and Ayaka are watching all this, it sucks that we can't see any of their reactions.

The irony, when Honoka first met Evermillion and travelled to the 'field of dreams', Ayaka was petrified. Now when he ""first""met them both, Evermillion is a stone statue. And not nearly as large and fabulous as she will start to be.
At least we finally get confirmation on our long held theory that Ayaka was the first 'host' prior to Honoka. This must be where they swap.

So, there's a lot to consider this chapter. Some I already brought up.
And let's consider what we know of the timeline from here on:
1) Honoka must swap places here with Ayaka, and Kayou gets trapped in a crystal something. The rest of the Kagari household die out somehow. Kazane and Shiori take over somehow.
2) Ayaka is allowed to live by Kazane, but she is still remanded to the room of despair in the annex, and stillsuffers a bit. Although, Honoka gets to visit with her as his continued trips with Kazane allow, which are her bright points in life.
3) At some point, THE INCIDENT happens, although a lot of what we assumed happens THEN actually happened NOW. Ayaka and Honoka are gravely injured, him more than her, and both of their memories of EVERYTHING in their lives prior to that point are erased or rewritten.
4) Ayaka starts to remember eventually through her dreams and ongoing blood contract with HonoMillion, and the actual chapter 1 plot of the story starts once she finds him.

Wait... Did Kazane try to kill Ayaka or merely slashed at her to destroy the vessel to free (eliminate) Evermillion and Awake from the pain of being her vessel? I think there is a distinction here between an act of Malice and one of Mercy. It might also go some way toward explaining what happened to Komachi-mama too. The way I see it, Kazane already believed Ayaka was beyond saving when Fox-bitch used her as a false vessel and was only suffering so she did her idiot best to free her.

She clearly wasn't being malicious, as she apologizes even before doing it.
However, it clearly had nothing to do with mercy or helping Ayaka either. The reason is obviously because she thinks a vessel to hold Evermillion (or something along those lines) is far too dangerous to exist, and NEEDS to be destroyed before it can be used for ill.
There's probably more to it then that, but Kayou was planning on killing Ayaka anyway.
