Seriously, socialism doesn't work. I've taken the Amtrak in NY a couple times between cities, and it was always late and had to make stops because the rails were either shit or covered in debris. Even the other passengers were stating how shit it was and that private enterprise wouldn't suffer like that. Amtrak is a joke. Socialism is a joke. NY is a joke.

Last time I rode Amtrak was 17 years ago. It was an enjoyable experience. Rode from NY to CA. Sat in the observation car for most of the ride, just sipping cocktails and watching the countryside go by.

Because the majority of what Amtrak trains ride on are rails owned by freight companies. They give priority to their own trains so Amtrak trains have to wait and give access to them and the rails the Amtrak trains travel on are old and unsafe for high speed travel, so the conductor has to go a certain speed.

Amtrak doesn't own any railroad tracks they just run on it. If there's a delay it's not their fault 99 percent of the time.

People doing maintenenace on tracks and other trains are what causes the delays. They might have to drive slow if there's high winds in case there are trees down.

No one really rides Amtrak by me and they literally leave their engines running overnight just wasting fuel in freezing temps. Usually there's a small engine that keeps the water warm so it doesn't freeze but they just leave the engine running over night. It's a huge waste of money.

Gas is $2 a GALLON in the US including highway fuel tax, and it is produced inside the US now. My car is bigger than your crummy apartment. Saw a thread similar to this the other day. The answer is no because long distance passenger train service is so expensive it has to be subsidized simply to exist. There is no demand or incentive for private companies to provide it in the US in 2017. Where it is needed in Metro areas there is already light rail and subways to go from places like NY to PH for example.

Bullet trains are not a solution either. The one in CA is 100 billion over budget and will probably never be built due to massive corruption and logistical hurdles. It will be no cheaper than Amtrak even if built, is only marginally faster and there is no reason to believe there will be high ridership due to the high cost and ready availability of cheap flights.

Basically passenger trains only make sense if they start with managable distances/routes between densely populared areas that will consistantly generate high ridership. Otherwise they will lose money and just become cesspools like Amtrak that have to be subsidized.

i fucking hate it. i used to take the train until i realized i was subsidizing the unprofitable routes. dont keep them open if they dont even sustain themselves

There is plenty of access to cheap public transport is urban areas of the US. Just not cheap long distance passenger travel
which the poor definitely do not need anyway. It will never be profitable in the US because the distances are much greater and there is no demand for it anymore. There are too many cheaper alternatives. Even if you built bullet trains across the US the ticket price would probably be even more expensive than Amtrak because the up front cost of doing so would be astronomical and there will never be high enough ridership to justify the cost investment for those routes. Also, since there's no private money it will have to be government run or subsidized and would probably be just as corrupt and shitty as Amtrak.

There is simply no demand for it and even with government subsidies it is still too expensive and inconvenient to be practical.
