The correlation of poverty to crime is far less significant than the correlation of relative poverty to crime. I.e. people with money and people without money living in close proximity. Poor rural areas have a similar rate of crime to wealthy areas. But in areas where wealthy and poor people live in close proximity. It skyrockets. This can also explain why places drug dealing, which creates wealth, when spread through poverty stricken areas leads to more crime than drug dealing in wealthier areas because the income disparity is exacerbated by the relative poverty of those not dealing drugs.
