We dropped nflx years ago and most tv before that - it's just too irritating as op says. The commercials are the same way. I had always tried to keep the children away from it and they are mostly gone so not a lot of resistance. It only takes a couple who want to watch some favorite show and the damn thing stays onfor hours. Pull out a board game, put on Christmas carols, read a book, have a plan and join the unhooked generation. Then rejoice that the degenerates in Hollywood have at least $10/month less and you have that much more.

Longmire is on Netflix and it is really good. It's about a sheriff in a small Wyoming town. Probably the only TV show I have watched in the last decade where I wasn't constantly noticing (((coincidences))) and (((Hollywood influences))) in every episode.
It's not just marketing, it's that in terms of alternatives, there really weren't any besides physical media. But yes, the average consumer is ignorant and will willingly support DRM and the likes if it means convenience of shitty streams to their device.
