For fiction, read Jack London. The Sea Wolf is a personal favorite.
But if you include nonfiction, everyone here should read Might is Right immediately if they haven't already. Say what you will about it, in my opinion it's one of the most important books ever written.
Stop that, it's obvious people making these lists haven't read all these books.
