I think it was just plain exhaustion, both physical and mental. He's strong, but he had been pushing himself really fucking hard for the past few months.

One of the cutest moments in the whole show.

I believe it was a combination of many things. At least some of it had to do with Yuuri. Remember how shocked he looked when Viktor told him that Yuuri might retire? His monologue was entirely dedicated to him being upset over that possibility, and he wanted to give the best performance to ensure he'd win gold so that Yuuri wouldn't have a reason to retire.

His true feelings about Yuuri were the focus of his part of the episode.
