Croatian General Slobodan Praljak, 72, said in court "I am not a war criminal" and then pulled a vile of poison out of his pocket that he smuggled into the court room. He did this after his 20 year sentence was finalized by the judge. He didn't want to die in prison for charges he felt were wrongly against him. And definitely didn't want the UN to have the last say in his life.
Did he really deserve twenty years? The UN needs to focus more on environmental problems in India (big threat to humanity since bio-hazards can develop there). That should be a larger priority than prosecuting an old man.
>Did he really deserve twenty years? He already served 15 years in prison, and voluntarily gave himself up.
He would have been released immediately, since time served during an investigation counts as double, he effectively served 30 years of his 20 year sentence.
He sacrificed himself on principle. Not to avoid prison.
