Yes the jews totally did it, and it is even possible the deaths had a sacrificial significance too. Jews are efficient in their brutality, and that would have killed two birds with one stone. They wanted power and didn't like the monarchy. Being nobility comes with obligations, or ideally it should. Also Jews hate monarchy because it celebrates honor, duty, sacrifice for your people.
