People decided speed>quality. It didn't help that when there series that CR/Funi weren't picking up that actually could use fansubs, they weren't subbed for weeks and eventually months.

That's always been the case. Even when fansubs were more prevalent, people would go for the faster groups over the groups with better subs.

I didn't even know HS subbed, I thought they just stole subs.

Doesn't help when the quality difference isn't that great to begin with.

They don't, but if there is no source to rip from then there is no HS. There have been a few series that didn't (and an obvious demand for fansubs) like Jinsei, but even then the subs were slow.

If I was a monkey I'd use puya for sure.

The fansub war really only became about quality after CR started "simulcasting" new shows. Even the most reliable speedsubbers rarely went an entire season without at least one episode taking more than a week.

There are some shows where the experience just isn't complete without Commie, but most of the time there isn't a huge difference.

I've been watching fansubs for 10 years and I can barely remember commie only uses one line for OP/ED, how is anyone supposed to remember what subs do what

I grew up with bootleg VHS fansubs and lived to see the boom thanks to the internet, and finally the death as people caught on to the idea of monetizing it. It's a bittersweet feeling.

Of those only about 5 are still alive in some form. All the cartel groups are dead.
