Basically the Buddha wondered why people suffered. he watched people and studied life and realized we suffer because we are attached to things. your mom dies and you are sad because you loved your mom, you were attached to her. your dog dies and same bullshit but maybe to a lesser degree. He posited that the way to remove suffering from the world was to remove our attachment to everything, and then set down the 8 fold path on how to do that.
