1st to 3rd stage were pretty solid actually. After that it gets boring and only interesting if you like cars.

The first stage is actually really good. The races and the characters are interesting and the slice of life aspect works pretty well alongside the main action.
Second stage is pretty much the same but less hype. Same goes for third stage.
4th and 5th are more race oriented but the opponents are cookie cutter at best, besides the last 2 guys in 4th and the Grim Reaper in 5th.
Then you get this guy in Final Stage, who's like a shy/more cocky version of Takumi.
If you can push through the first 3 stages then I don't see why you wouldn't just finish the series as a whole.
If you don't wanna spend tens on hours on this series, at least watch the Legend movies, they're kind of a retelling of the first stage with better animation (better than some whole seasons combined desu).

It's your basic sports anime progression. It starts out really good, well-paced, starts feeling "tacked-on" around the 2nd or 3rd "season", then gets ultra generic and repetitive.
Happens every time, without fail. Sports anime is front-loaded. There's only so much you can do without repeating yourself or jumping the shark into absurdville. There are only so many times you can do "this opponent is the toughest yet, oh the MC beat them" before it gets boring.
