They even had to make shit up, since volume 10 wasn't even released yet, and the ending of season 2 was supposed to be based off volume 10.

Its been a while since I read the novels, but the perfect place to stop would be at the end of volume 8 with chifuyu.
They also excluded the separate dates during the cultural festival, the cannonball fast, and I believe some Madoka screentime.
Overall it could have been WAY better had it stuck to the source material. IS2 is one of the biggest disappointments since I was really looking forward to S2 at the time.
