Finally got around to watching this movie and loved it.
I read a lot of negative feedback though and that surprised me.
What does Sup Forums think about it ?

It wasn't his best, in my opinion.
I thought it was really boring.

But it's the film he always wanted to do, so it's not really for us, it's for him.

The criticism that I read the most was that the movie was too slow and didn't really have a climax.
That's what I liked the most about it though, it was relaxing.

My name isn't Sup Forums but I thought it was good.
I'm glad it wasn't too fantastical, but the dream segment was glorious.
That ominous zeplin dropping bombs was very intense.
Also I don't like the timeskip in the end.
I know it's pretty obvious what happened but it pretty much forced the viewer to do reaserch on the zero fighter plane.
The foreigner is probobly my favirote Ghibli character, that accent.

>I read a lot of negative feedback though and that surprised me.
It was made by the anti-robot anti-human guy and voiced by the Master. I'm reasonably sure you can connect the dots by yourself.

watched princess kaguya the best ghibli movie before it so that didn't really help, but Wind Rises kinda felt like Miyazaki's worst.

Earthquake scene was pretty good though

Not everyone hates Miyazaki, and Anno for literally no reason.
It had bad reviews because it wasn't as good as his other films, not just because they hate a certain individual.

His eyes sparkled in a very weird fashion as well. He felt so strange and offsetting... He's definitely one of the highlights of the movie

I really liked the start and the dream sequences, but thought the romance wasn't strong enough to carry the movie once it became the main focus.

Didn't even show him develop the Zero

I think too many people wanted a fantasy setting.
The problem with that is that people don't look at the message of the movie and just enjoy the ride.
Kiyazaki clrearly lays it out to everyone.
However they rate the movie is how they think about the message, or they just fell asleep.

What ?
The romance was really interesting I think. It wasn't a "OMG we're soooooo in love right now we should show everybody how bloody happy we are" kind of thing. It was intimate and simple.

That being said the "wife is fatally ill" trope really felt cheap and shoehorned in. The relationship could have evolved in much the same way without it.

I honestly think this is his best work. It has really refined so much of his earliest and best ideas into a drama that pits our ideals and aspirations against the realities of what is possible. The range of emotions is much more somber than his other work, and I think that may have turned some people off. Many consider Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke to be his best I think because they have strong themes with breathtaking visuals.

This movie has the visuals but they are purposely subdued to fit into the narrative more evenly. That being said, this movie haunts me in a way that the other Hayazaki films haven't. I realize a lot of what I've said amounts to "muh opinions", but I would still recommend people who didn't quite enjoy the movie to give it another shot.

None of the characters really had any charm IMO. It is sad because I saw a documentary about Wernher von Braun shortly after watching the Wind Rises, and I suspect there could have been so much more of Horikoshi to show as an individual than what Miyazaki showed. The theme "the wind rises, but we must live" would mean something to me if the protagonist actually overcame an obstacle instead of being polly anna about literally everything in life.

>That being said the "wife is fatally ill" trope really felt cheap and shoehorned in.
That's what I meant. The romance itself was nice, but would have done better if it remained in the background or gave birth to a different conflict. Even with her death drawing parallels to the death of the purity of his dream, it felt like her whole situation stole time that could have been best spent on something else.

>None of the characters really had any charm
This is it.
That's why I didn't like this film. I really did not care about ANY of the characters in this film. Also, Anno's awful voice acting didn't make anything easier while trying to watch.

What was the message?
Technology is good but war is bad?

>war criminal shown in a positive light
What was KFC man thinking?
When will Miyazaki make movie about heroes of Unit 731?

Honestly, Porco Rosso did it better.

This has been on my WL since I got the Miyazaki box set. Want to finish all his others first so I have a real strong understanding about him.

I didn't like the animation and thought it was horribly subpar for Ghibli standards

He wouldn't be able to acheive his dream because of the war.
It's the jap governments fualt.

SORA NI

It's probably Miyazaki's most serious, artsy, un-anime-ish adult movie. People expect one thing from him: family entertainment with fantasy elements and an environmental message. I can appreciate his desire to step out of his box, even if the movie is just a bit above average by other standards. Ponyo is his worst only if you've seen every movie up to that point because it adds nothing new to his oeuvre.

The animators were actually mad at him because they got bored of drawing people of just walking.

I can understand that the animators would find the project boring but that hardly explains why the audience bashed the movie

Straight up I think this is a masterpiece, one of Miyazaki's best films, one of the best animated films ever, and heck, even one of the best movies of the 21st century. Wind Rises solidified him as a master director, a modern day cartoon Fellini, capable of seamlessly intertwining reality with dreamlike surrealism. It's one of the most beautifully crafted animated films ever made, due in no small part to the money that went into it, but also the incredibly talented artists and animators who worked on it. No detail was spared, every single drawing is a delight. The narrative is extraordinary - a beautiful and deeply personal story of perseverance and passion. It takes risks and makes bold statements, and is all the more poignant for it. Anno as the voice of Jiro is one of my favourite castings in anime, and the overall cast has neorealist voice acting perfected. The sound design in general is sublime; I especially like the human-made sound effects, personifying the earthquake or plane engines as great roaring monsters. Wind Rises fucking owns. It's daring, it's romantic, it's sad, it's uplifting, it's awesome. The swan song of one of animation's greatest minds.

>the (((nose))) knows

He unretired, though. Hopefully this doesn't mean he'll make one final kiddy movie.

Dub or sub?

Sure, but that doesn't make it any less a capstone to his career, especially due to its autobiographical nature. Everything else from here on out is an epilogue.

Sub.

Always sub.

Always sub you dingus.

Holy shit, that image. Did Anno decline at first?

oy vey remember the 6 gorrillion no more war with israel

Much like Grave of Fireflies; it's soft-leftist Japanese propaganda.

In the blu ray there's a special feature where an interviewer asks anno and miyazaki all these questions and it's subbed.
Let me see if I can bring up that question and screencap it.

From what I read, Anno was a bit put out by being told he'd have to do French and German, some of it sung, as well as Japanese dialog, for his first major VA role. He'd've been much happier just drawing Zeros.

Spotted the chink

As fare as the Elevens are concerned, all gaijin have big noses, not just the (((gaijin))),

>more of Horikoshi to show as an individual

Wind Rises isn't a biography about Horikoshi, really - the details in the film are almost complete fabrications based on a very few facts - the character's life is more a personal biography or statement about Miyazaki himself and used to explore Miyazaki's own internal feelings about the tension between achieving dreams and the compromises you need to make in reality to achieve them.

...

...

Because it was too true. People hate the truth. People hate reality.

What kind of relationship do they have?

Anno was very reluctant.

Kind of glad it's looking like it wasn't really his send-off. I wonder what his next film will be like.

>it wasn't really his send-off
?
I don't get it, I thought he retired for real this time.

He did... Until he didn't anymore.

Me too. While it would have been a good last film, I think Miyazaki leveled up creatively making Wind Rises and it's exciting to see what's next.

Does Miyazaki like NGE? Is he an Asuka man?

At this point just assume he isn't actually retired until he's dead.

I'm not sure if he's said anything about it.

very friendly mentor/student relation ship.

It was just chinks mad that the main character was made out to be a sympathetic designer who just wanted to fucking make planes, instead of some baby skewering monster.

...

>Anno taking care of things
Rehashing Eva & directing a godzilla film is taking care of things?

How about Nausica 2.22?

I would actually really want that.

Link to the interview?
Wouldn't want Nausicaa 2, but I'm excited for whatever Anno directs next.

I don't want it to be about Nausicaa, but I would love to see more from that particular setting.

>I don't want it to be about Nausicaa
What the fuck? Nausicaa is literally the best girl of all time from anywhere ever.
I want more Nausicaa, not to mention there tons of stuff from the manga he could adapt.

This.
Princess Kaguya just threw me off-balance, so I went in with a expectation way to high for the movie's sake. It was ok.
I liked Marnie better.

I have absolutely no faith in Anno's ability to properly portray the character.

It came with in the extra features in american blu-ray
I don't know if it's on nyaa or not
I'm just taking snapshots from my BD

>That being said the "wife is fatally ill" trope really felt cheap and shoehorned in. The relationship could have evolved in much the same way without it
But that was when the relationship actually became interesting.
With Jiro neglecting his dying wife, working in the rare times he's with her and even FUCKING SKOCKING in the same room while she holds his hand.

What do you mean user? He's not bad at adapting thing.

I had the opposite experience actually, watching Wind Rises beforehand and being a little disappointed by Kaguya.

That scene was fucking killer.

I thought it was okay. Definitely didn't suck. Good one-time watch, but I don't feel like watching it again anytime soon.

>hikoukigumo

Synthesis of every twentieth century scientist who never missed a chance to outwit the government and do good.

It's a pathetic watered-down version of the much superior Porco Rosso, with mixed messages. The characters are flat, the music is forgettable, and Anno's voice acting was hilariously bad. Miyazaki took what could have been a very interesting story about a conflicted genius, totally rewrote his life to project himself onto it, and ended up making it MORE boring than the original real-life story. It doesn't accomplish anything, as an animated movie or a biopic. It showcases all of Miyazaki's weaknesses- his inability to make convincing adult characters, his lack of understanding of more complex cinematography, and worst of all, his heavy-handed moralistic themes that overpower the audience and their ability to make their own interpretation.

>Wind Rises solidified him as a master director, a modern day cartoon Fellini, capable of seamlessly intertwining reality with dreamlike surrealism.
>Fellini

You're a complete fucking idiot.

Oh yes, I also forgot to mention another one of Miyazaki's weaknesses- his inability to create a proper story structure. Jiro's romance with Nahoko was poorly crafted and unconvincing (not that Miyazaki has ever been able to write anything remotely romantic), and it was not developed enough where it would serve as a part of the conflict within him regarding his wife and his job. At the end, all it ends up being is a sad side-stoy meant to elicit cheap tears, while taking up more precious screentime from a far more interesting narrative regarding planes and war.

>I want Anno to turn Nausicaa into the next Disney Star Wars franchise

Why the fuck not, he already killed his own. You Evageeks disgust me.

I honestly felt the dub of this wasn't too bad. At least ghibli dubs in general feel alright

Ghibli dubs are taken seriously, because they're higher profile and the studio itself has its hand in the dubbing. That's not to say that it's okay to watch dubs.

You too.

>He's not bad at adapting thing.

He totally deviated from the manga to such an extent that its author demanded he be kicked off.

Mind you, the manga was not good at all. But if Anno deviates from Nausicaa's manga, which we all know he will do it his stupid fanboyism for Kushana, he will fuck it up horribly.

Not that I would even want some incompetent Japanese George Lucas even touching the manga and filling it up with awful CGI and Evangelion references.

What was the scene where the kids reject his offer of some cake supossed to mean?

Fantastic retort, why don't you fuck off back to your Ghibli blog, Daniel?

And Disney money. I think Ghibli is the only anime an American company gives a shit about decently dubbing.

Once he decided to marry a woman he'd known for two minutes at the hotel, I immediately turned it off.

Dub, i could accept liking anno as a director or a animator but he ISN'T A FUCKING VOICE ACTOR

>Japanese propaganda
How it was propaganda when the whole point was that the guy had to make war planes because the government forced him to? And its explicitly stated in the movie that common folks are suffering due to all funds being spent in the war industry.

I would have liked the movie more if Jim from the office did more than misplace a slide rule and become a bronchitis carrier.

If someone has edited the movie into a 20 minute video to fix it, please let me know.

Do you think "you're am idiot" deserves something better?

His hipocrisy, obviously.

Not the guy you're replying to, but who the fuck is Daniel?

Honestly the dub is pretty decent.

Japanese right-wingers do call it that.
Meanwhile Japanese leftists called it right-wing propaganda because it wasn't apologetic enough

>literally NO U

Pathetic.

Dumb fucker who runs the Ghibli Blog, and is the only retard on the internet who has ever compared Miyazaki to Fellini, of all of fucking people, despite the two having nothing in common. The moment he compared those two I knew it was him. Either that, or it's a copypasta of something he wrote.

He is fanboy who holds Ghibli on a super high pedestal and likes to pretend that all other anime and manga are trash.

Honestly why are you so mad?

You don't have to be mad at someone to call them an idiot.

Nice post user, I agree. Theres such a purity to this film, and also Ponyo. Throughout his entire career Miyazaki has been simplifing and stripping away all unnecessary story elements and these 2 films are his greatest achievements in that regard. Miyazaki reached god-level with the wind rises, it felt like I was inside miyazakis head and viewing his dreams. I've seen the movie almost 50 times now (not exaggerating) and it never gets old. Also this film has the greatest ending I've ever seen. When Jiro says thank you to Caproni and walks off with him at the end I can't help but cry every time, I thought Anno's voice acting was excellent. Im excited to see where miyazaki goes from here and what his next film is like.

Don't drag Ponyo down with your bait

I didn't ask for that. I just want the rest of the manga to be adapted.
Nice job moving goal posts though.

>Throughout his entire career Miyazaki has been simplifing and stripping away all unnecessary story elements

Is that why Ponyo was an awful, convoluted and overly extravagant piece of shit compared to Totoro? You do know it has the highest amount of cuts out of any Ghibli film ever made, right?

That nightmare zeplin though.
Such a fucking cocktease.

I actually meant to quote the guy you were replying to
