It's really hard to have a story where the main character is the underdog who has to work hard to win, but at the same time he's also the chosen one who is the son of a great hero and has a demon fox giving him near-infinite magic resources.

You cannot honestly say that wasn't a major theme in early Naruto. We're introduced to him wanting to be the best to prove himself to the village, catching up to Sasuke is most of his motivation at the start, and the entire Neji fight in the Chunin Exams revolves around Naruto proving to him that it's not about the role you're born into, it's the role you make for yourself (except oops - turns out he's the chosen one, so Neji was right).

Eh, I disagree. As bad as Bleach was, it never really fucked its own narrative. Ichigo was shown to be special from the beginning and things just snowballed. Also, Bleach was only watchable until the end of the Soul Society arc, everything that came afterwards was horrible. And even then it wasn't that good. Not to say that Ichigo was terribly boring as a main character.
Naruto had at least some actually fun arcs even if it all went downhill after a while, but it was better than Bleach and for a longer time.
Fairy Tail is one of the most boring series I've ever started and regret the hours I put into seeing if it managed to get better.
