If we are saved by faith alone, then why did Jesus, many of the epistles, and pretty much the rest of the Bible put such an emphasis on following the commandments and practicing good works?

That is because true faith will produce works. A barren tree that produces no fruit will be cut down and cast into the fire, so will men who say they beleive but do nothing about it.
Genuine faith will drive man and cause good works. Protties think that doing works to get into heaven is conceited and they are right, but this ignores thae fact that many protties just sit on their asses and do nothing while talking about Jesus.
Spirituality of Christian life is not in words, but in acts. Faith that does not move mountains is a dead one and so are people who speak the words but do nothing to act on those words.
If you are truly saved like you say you are, then by default you should be leading a virtuous life as a proof of that faith. Anything else is hypocrisy and that is why everyone hates protties.
