Every single political theory whose practice expanded the scope of human rights has its roots in leftism. Not only is Communism at least tacitly supported by academic institutions, Marxism itself is a very complex and intricate political theory having undergone over a century of evolution that keeps even the keenest minds occupied for a lifetime.
Do you ever wonder why the entire right-wing, including the Libertarian right, barely contributed any political or social theory that endured even half a century? Very few right-wingers devote much work to political theory. Not only would pursuing the development of a political theory require a good deal of funding (and, let's face it, right-wingers aren't very amenable to funding intellectual pursuits unless there's a return on investment), they're going to have to fight an uphill battle against opposing intellectuals on the left, but even skeptics on the right. Right-wingers have capitalism to thank for all its intellectual weight, for without it, they'd perish. The Libertarians who talk up the market have no sway in the means of production, be they corporations or small businesses. They're all little men grasping desperately whose only consolation are the petty gifts of Capital for their time as priests.

To destroy the rule of imperialism, feudalism and bureaucrat-capitalism in China took the Chinese people more than a hundred years and cost them tens of millions of lives before the victory in 1949. Look! Were these not living tigers, iron tigers, real tigers? Nevertheless, in the end they changed into paper tigers, dead tigers, and bean-curd tigers. These are historical facts. Have people not seen or heard about these facts? There have indeed been thousands and tens of thousands of them!

I've never understood what's so intellectual or difficult about baking complex systems down to the dialectic. It's a fancy word that basically means let's find the the submissive and dominant in ever situation, oversimplify all socio-political interactions down to a false dichotomy, and remove moral agency from th individuals that constitute each dichotomous group and replace it with a vaguely collective goal which can then be evaluated up your own defined premises. It's actually quite comically simple and childish in nature.
Which is why it works so well, because it looks at then lens of the world like mean girls. Everyone has a group and the most popular and powerful are vicious and exploitative. All their other virtues are not a result of anything by privilege of their grouping.
It's so frustrating to hear people talk about it like it's more than just that.
