You see, what is fantastic about Prison School is that it is not a traditional comedy. Narrative wise, it is structured just like a dram/thriller. However, instead of relying on bathos, it uses absurdity to achieve humorous effect.

You see, Prison School's plot is full of plot points that it plays seriously. However, all of these plot points are absolutely ridiculous. But this is exactly why it is so funny: it takes ridiculous scenarios and writes them not just as a drama/thriller, but it writes it as a really well-written and exciting drama/thriller.

Prison school makes you simultaneously think "I can't believe this guy just shat his pants, how are they expecting me to take this as seriously as these characters, this is hilarious" and, unironically, think "Holy shit this guy just shat his pants to protect his friends, he is a fucking hero.

And that is why Prison School is the most sophisticated comedy anime of all time. Except Inferno Cop.

The first half had me in tears from laughter. Second half I chuckled. I hope Season 2 is consistent.

Well, there are a few really good moments in the manga later. Like, really had me gasping for air because of laughing.
But the very last arc is extremely drawn out crap. They might not get to it in S2, though.
