Well, if you’re new here, I would start reading the Bible in the book of Matthew, the first book of the New Testament, which is when Christ enters the scene. It is often accepted that the KJV (King James Version) of the bible is the most accurate, however there are other acceptable versions also.
You can buy a KJV for ~$10-$25 on Amazon, or find a PDF for free, online!
Additionally, I always recommend “The Orthodox Way” as it describes the existence of God as we know him - what he is - and what he isn’t. This is an inexpensive, easy to read paperback book which is also available on Amazon!

In those cases this is an extremely valid question and one that I had asked myself. I really, truly thought we were all alone here for some parts of my life. user, I dont know what you're seeking right now if anything; but for your sake if you are interested, and anyone else lurking - here is my advice on some first steps to take in seeking God:
I always recommend three things, all of which are available very affordably on Amazon:
1) "The Orthodox Way" By Kallistos Ware (Introduction to the Orthodox Church & Beliefs
2) "The Explanation of The Holy Gospel According To Matthew" by Blessed Theophylact, who was an Orthodox scholar around the 600s to the 800s. His writings have only very recently been translated into English, and they are DEEP. They explain the meanings of many things in the book of Matthew which are otherwise quite difficult to grasp, and his book, while it sounds intimidating, is actually quite easy to read/follow. This book takes you VERSE BY VERSE through the first book of the New Testament, where Jesus enters the scene. Its like reading this book inside the bible, but better, because you can more easily follow along with the story, at the surface level and deeper.
3) "Beginning to Pray" by Anthony Bloom - Explains ways in which we can know God, and, well, what the title says.
If I were to help a friend or a family member with their interest in the Orthodox Faith, these are the three books that I would give them. I hope they will help you!!

There has never been an asteroid so large and so close to Earth that it caused an eclipse.
Further, an asteroid wouldn't be able to cause what is described. Like nasa.gov/audience/forstudents/5-8/features/nasa-knows/what-is-an-eclipse-58/ states, "solar eclipses only last for a few minutes". Normal eclipses only last minutes for a reason: the moon is revolving as we're also rotating, nothing (that isn't light years away, anyway) is going to stay in the same relative position in the sky for long. A passing asteroid would be much the same. But this darkness is recorded as lasting for hours. An asteroid hurtling through space could not precisely block the sun for that long. (And note that it does need to be precise. As you likely experienced during the last eclipse, unless an eclipse is total, there is no darkness - its a bit dimmer than normal but the stars are not visible like we have recorded here)
And doesn't it stretch believably that such an incredibly freak natural occurance would coincidentally take place right at the single most religiously significant time in human history, while Jesus Christ is on the cross?

Based user, if you were to begin reading the book of Matthew in the bible (KJV bible recommended if you dont have one) which is where Jesus enters the scene, and to genuinely repent of your sins to the best of your ability and to accept Jesus as your savior - and to give the Christian life a try for a while - well, I truly believe that if you wholeheartedly do these things, everything will be revealed to you as it has been the millions upon millions of Christians throughout the ages! Its a freeing experience...

You don't even need NASA for much of what I've said, you saw it with your own eyes in August. Remember how, even though most of the sun was covered by the moon, it was pretty much just as bright as normal?
The sun must be fully and precisely covered for an eclipse: even a sliver will still have it pretty much bright as day. An asteroid hurtling through space would not cover the sun for hours.

Well, not quite. First, one of the defining characteristics of Christianity is that we are all here by free will - one must choose to be a Christian. I've had a couple of experiences which I simply knew were the presence of God, once as a child first being reached by an evangelistic ministry and the second time after learning about Christ, starting to read the new testament, and making a genuine effort to find God, genuinly repenting of my sins for the first time ever. I cried like I was an infant for the first time in my adult life, my entire chest was extremely warm and I knew I was experiencing the presence of God.
Additionally, in my fedora (not agnostic, literal fedora) days, even then - I felt that there was some greater force of karma out there, above all else, but I couldnt explain or identify it further.
user, have you ever thought about setting out to find God for yourself? We believe that Christ desires a genuine, mutual relationship with all of us on earth, and that if one tries to find this wholeheartedly, he will. Get an old textbook, not Weelocks (you can use than to translate their selections from actual Roman sources, but get an old textbook focused on reading Latin. Then get a pdf of Diedrichs Latin vocab. It's about 85% of early Roman and medieval latin. If you want to start reading something easy, read 1 John, or romans, or certain Psalms. Julius Caesar is known for his simplicity of speech and straightforward grammar. Someone like Cicero prides himself in being "intellectual" and "knowing obscure grammar and being well spoken and educated." So if he frustrates you then know that he was an intellecutal poltiican.

5720 seconds is about 95 minutes. So to get something big enough to block the sun for three hours, it would have to be double the size of Jupiter! There is nothing in or near our solar system anywhere even approaching that.
And again: wouldn't it stretch coincidence beyond all believably for such a tremendous occurrence to also take place right at the single most religiously significant moment in human history?

Well, thats very understandable, at one point neither could I, user.
Do you regularly attend a wholesome church? Sometimes God's grace is visibly evident in those around us, in their stories and their experiences. Regular, guided prayer in the services also has helped me personally.
Additionally, theres a book - I talked about it earlier ITT, its called "Beginning To Pray" By Anthony Bloom, and it tells a number of stories of people's first encounters with the realization of a greater power out there.
I think that one can claim to know God through regular prayer, and through trying to go through their daily life making a conscious, genuine effort to be the best Christian they can be, to deal with their daily problems as Jesus might have, and would best like for us to.
But thats about it. I dont think hardly any of us would say that our words are God's words, or that we know his thoughts, we just do our best with what we do know

Also, if this thread were to last longer, I would calculate the relation between how close something is and how large it appears in the sky to see how close such an object would be to the Earth. Unfortunately it looks like it will be archived soon, but if you can, do it at some point when you think about this conversation - you'll likely find that this TREMENDOUS object would have to be so close to Earth to block out the sun that its gravitational effects would devastate it
Also, its worth noting that the non-Christian sources were under the impression that, the duration of it aside, this was a standard eclipse. That doesn't gel with such a tremendous and new object being in the sky and blocking the sun
My faith has always been interpersonal, but I'm always glad to see others spread Christianity as something as not as a joke. It's so hard today to discuss religion without a counter person trying to convince you're an idiot. Without faith our lives are meaningless in the end. Thank you anons for keeping religion alive. I'd wager it has a lot to do with the moral impotence of Buddhism in Western culture. A Western Buddhist is just an empty spiritualist moron. They live no differently and have no views that really differ from any given random degenerate.
Christianity on the other hand has extreme moral implications: it calls you to live radically different from most others.
I'm an example myself, to an irreligious person I look insane: I'm celibate and live as cheaply as possible despite my good job so that I can send as much as I can afford to the poor, and I am open about opposing sin like homosexuality and abortion.
A Western Buddhist is indistinguishable from the modern cultural background, but real Christians are very different and say that you not only should but MUST for your eternal sake be as well
