Why would prices rise if there isn't an endless tide of people to purchase? they would have to remain within consumer demand. and of course, companies keep backlogs of products.

I mean what if population was kept low so that you could really get to know your local shopkeeper, and when he raises his prices you can openly discuss with him the cause of such raises, and maybe organise him other transport/storage solutions.
