Alright someone explain the meme to me. Let me in on the joke.

Why did this average movie get unanimous praise and shatter box office records?

Big names and lots of shills to get the ball rolling. Then people seeing it just because lots of other people are seeing it.

Even Shinkai was surprised by how well it fared.

So much so that he wanted people to stopped praising it as though it were the second coming or something.

because this movie is as good as your taste is shit, fgt.

zero originality, non-endearing characters, average story.
Good graphics though.

japan's taste has been shit for a while now.

Why is is not in America yet?

Fuck you Funimation

Because it's 2017.

A mix of good animation/art, and a feel good story that holds up if you don't look at it too hard.

...

Because 2016 was the meme timeline.

All the memeing with KeitAi inadvertently boosted the original parent to huge success.

God I wish normies would all go kill themselves and rid the world of their shit, entry-level tastes.

Not even the Director knows and he says he would not accept any Oscar.

Think about it.

right place, right time

Cellphone meme magic.

Posting in a fitting-in thread.
Have a Keit-Ai.

>japan's taste has been shit for a while now.
You mean peoples taste in general has been shit for awhile now, this isn't just a trend in Japan. Just look at what kind of movies win the oscars, i'm still salty gravity won any awards.

How many times did you rewatch it Sup Forums?

>Let me in on the joke.
Most people have shit taste.

Frankly it's embarrassing how well this mediocre anime is doing.
This is one of those events that will shape the industry for the next few years.

Meme magic

More than what's considered healthy

Keit-ai found a way.

Stop posting that because it's already a thing.

>#1 in the Japanese box office for 13 weeks, 12 weekends
>Has surpassed Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle as #2 Anime Film of All Time in Japan
>Earns 20 billion yen and counting to surpass Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in Japan
>Reached 10 billion yen 9 days faster than Frozen
>Now beyond 20 billion yen (US$288 million).
>Considered for an Oscar
>Wins LA Film Critics Award
>Has become the no. 1 highest-grossing Japanese movie in China
>Has become the no. 1 movie in Thailand
>On the cusp of going beyond the box office gross of Spirited Away (US$289.1 million)
>The film immediately topped Korea's box office opening on 555 screens all around the country which is a new record for the Japanese film.
>Also dominated China breaking the all-time records for the most advance tickets sold and the fastest film to reach 100 million yuan ($ 14 million or 1.7 billion yen), with the first 100 yuan earned in just the film's opening day.
>The film also dominated the charts of Hong Kong and Taiwan becoming the number 2 and top highest grossing Japanese film on the respective countries
>Inexplicably jumps 41% in the Japanese box office and climbs from 7th place to 3rd place in one week
>On the verge of surpassing Spirited Away's worldwide gross, making it the highest grossing anime of all time
>Still in the top 10 in the Japanese box office towards the beginning of 2017

So this is meme magic. Not bad.

>spending $12 to watch this shit once
>watching it 6 times
Can you get more of a cuck than that?

Those are Singapore dollars, $1 Singapore = 70ยข US

Warcraft made a huge amount of money in china as well.
Just saying.

So they're almost the same, only $10!

Don't they teach arithmetic where you come from? 12 x .7 = $8.40

Captcha is a road sign to Dachau

>On the cusp of going beyond the box office gross of Spirited Away (US$289.1 million)

How has this still not already happened? It's been "on the cusp" for weeks and weeks now apparently.

>one dollar less!
Same shit.

Yes, but Your Name is hugely successful in Japan, where it matters.

Worldwide, Moana makes double than it did and no Japanese film has ever surpassed $300 in gross.

Locally though, it's 4th most watched film of all time in Japan.

8.4 rounds down to 8, so it's 2 dollars less. :^)

*$300 million
*highest grossing film of all time in Japan

Yeah, tell that to the cashier the next time you go watching it, faggot. :^)
The point still remains, why did this mediocre movie do so well?

Keit-Ai has been made into:

>a wiki
>a fanfic
>a fictionpress story
>a manga
>a meme
>an anime preview
>an anime episode
>an anime series
>an honest-to-goodness anime movie
>Oscar considered
>a critically acclaimed box office success in Japan
>a worldwide hit

Has anyone seen an even more blessed meme like this one? Only Trump comes close.

>The point still remains, why did this mediocre movie do so well?

Meme magic.

Crashing this plane with no survivors.

To think I hated the meme from the first moment. God made Kimi no na Wa successful only to spite me.

We did it Sup Forums! We became Baneposting!

Threadly reminder that the for every Keit-ai post a mod deletes, Kimi no Na wa gets an extra $100,000 on its gross profits.

Taki looks like a giant on that poster.

I have watched it five times now. On that shitty DVD screener.

I really want to watch the new screener, I hope it has better quality.

Because great visual, the rest is just a fluke since anime is apparently acceptable thing on non-weeb society now.

Why is 5 cm less of a gigantic hit than Kimi no Na wa?

No one accepts baneposting, though, fuck off.

...

I'm really happy that this movie is so popular and is becoming the most selling anime movie ever, because the salt of your tears taste so much better.

No NTR.

Also, porn.

The meme was a huge part. Sup Forums created a monster and do not accept their responsibility.

This movie would be way better, if they didn't share the same ethnicity.

>unanimous praise
Actually, it got criticized harshly by Japanese critics (maybe nips aren't weabs).
16 times
Unofficially, the worldwide grossing is $220m(JP)+$80m(CH)+$15m(KR)~around $300m. But it still cannot beat Spirited Away when you take the inflation rate in account.

Personnaly, i enjoyed this movie. It wasn't an "excellent movie" but between good and very good :
-I appreciated the quality of the settings
-i appreciated the variety and the quality of the places, the impression of travelling in japan
-i appreciated the scenario, not that mind blowing but good enough
-the characters were good enough too : people are all nice, kind of fairy tale character but that's an appreciable escape from reality people. Like Ghibli movies but in subdued

>Actually, it got criticized harshly by Japanese critics

bullshit

>Actually, it got criticized harshly by Japanese critics
All those critics they wrote sounds like jealousy to me.

No bullshit, the recent debate is how it was excluded in certain cinema magazine's ranking.

>headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20170113-00000002-wordleaf-movi&utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

Maybe not all of them, some of them and actually don't see the value in it (like some of anons) and some of them hold anti-mess policy, while they tried to hype Corner of the World as the masterpiece.

...

oh dear

Gotta love not Miyazaki movies

>But it still cannot beat Spirited Away when you take the inflation rate in account.

Not really, Spirited Away came during the Lost Decade, when the punch line to every joke was that $1 was equal a million yen.

Baneposting is actually funny tho.

Literally who fucking cares.

>people who have more disposable income than me are cucks!
>cuck cuck cuck!

Honestly, the Sup Forums cross-boarding faggots have gotten unbearable as of late.

Because normies.

Meme magic.

>Ponyo is 3 spots above Princess Mononoke and 5 above The Wind Rises

The wind rises sucked german cock

because you and Sup Forums are autistic and lack an awareness of social nuance

>But it still cannot beat Spirited Away when you take the inflation rate in account.

Hurrdurr check out the inflation rates in Japan from the movie was released until now you idiot.

>$290,155,777
>$290,155,777
>$290,155,777
the-numbers.com/movie/Kimi-no-na-wa-(Japan)#tab=summary
We did it!!!

> We
Which part of Shinkai are you from, senpai?

HOLY SHIT

FINDS A WAY

>$290,155,777
>777
>Keit-ai becomes the highest grossing Japanese film of all time
>trips

KEK WILLS IT!

His sweaty left armpit. Duh.

The alternate universe version of him.

Do the people who watch this movie actually understand what's going on with regard to the backstory (shrine maiden family and their powers), and respective timeline during each scene and how they influence each other? Do they enjoy the film with appreciation of these things because it seems like a lot to grasp on a first time watch.

Well user...maybe you know it's rather on you than the film itself. Your response doesn't match with the one the majority of people have. Sometimes you simply are in a minority and you gotta suck it up, accept and move on. And possibly suck a dick somewhere in the middle.

ALWAYS

you don't need to understand it to enjoy the movie. that's half the point of that type of storytelling. you get most of that on the second watch.

read some of shinkai's interviews and you'll learn why he chose to do it that way.

Saying that keit-ai meme magic made this movie popular is as stupid and grandeur as saying that Sup Forums got Trump elected president.

Get your fucking feet on the ground.

>memeing an anime to become the no. 1 best selling Japanese film of all time

wew lad

How butthurt do you think Miyazaki must be right now

>$290,155,777
>all these 777s

Pretty butthurt

What do people enjoy about it otherwise? I'm not sure how people can enjoy the movie without understanding what's going on. My guess is the animation and concept of separation, and the body-swapping/possession, but I'm not sure if these are enough to make people really enjoy the film without getting the lore and keeping track of the timeline.

>memeing a copypasta into the no. 1 best selling Japanese film of all time

ftfy

protip: you can enjoy something without understanding every little detail

it's like listening to music without understanding the lyrics. as long as you get the gist of what's going on, it's okay

>but I'm not sure if these are enough to make people really enjoy the film

also another protip: this has become the highest grossing anime movie ever. numbers don't lie. even if Sup Forums hates this movie, you should base your discussion on data, not arguments.

Because of capeshit. People got used to "just watching stuff". They dont analyze movies anymore, but instead want to be dazzled by shiney special effects. Kimi no na wa was an impeccable film for its first 60ish minutes. As soon as you go over the pacing and the shit that happens in the second half it would be impossible for you to give that movie anything more than a 7/10. Still better than shit like Zootopia or Kubo and the two strings, though.

It was meme power, amassed by Keit-Ai.

Kek willed it.

To be honest, I'm actually happy that the west is finally starting to recognize that not only Ghibli/Miyazaki make anime movies.

A boy falls and wakes up as a girl.

Unable to talk, he is gifted by a deus ex machina with the girl's body. Never minding the strange situation, he immediately tries to make her life better, and is overjoyed to find out that she has as well.

But, the next day, when he tries to remember the girl, she only shouts at him in the deepest corner of his mind. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he was lived in a town destroyed by a comet. In fact, she died in the disaster three years ago. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own three years in the future self, whose three year ago self is blissfully unaware of her crush.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to perform a terrorist attack in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to save the girl's life and hometown. While the two chase this ultimate goal, AMNESIA ensues as they begin to forget they fell in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.

But some day in the future, they don't each other in the streets of Tokyo, and ask each other a question...

Kimi no Na wa?

>1 Your Name $290,155,777
>2 Spirited Away $289,096,544
>CheyDunkley
Okay, which one of you faggot?

So this is just body swap shit?

Sounds uninteresting. Why is it doing so well?

Anime has been becoming a more and more popular and accepted hobby over the years. A romance movie is also about as accessible as you can get. That coupled with a somewhat popular director and a lot of viral marketing got the movie to do well initially. After that, it was simply the sheer popularity that made it continue to get more and more traction until it got to where it is now.

Why don't you watch it and find out for yourself?

Ponyo was what happened when Ghibli tried to do Disney.

>Football is just cucking a ball, sound uninteresting, why is it so popular?

I bet it wasn't worse than Shinkai trying to do Ghibli. That movie was really unfullfilling.
