I wanted to get a blu-ray copy of this but the reviews said it sucked. Is there a better version out there?

Different user, I also want to know.

I would like to know as well. Also I just finished SAC season1. It was amazing.

I own this blu-ray and I don't see why it would get bad reviews. Its got the movie in amazing quality with the subs and dub. All you really need.

If it's the 2.0 remaster, it sucks.

Also comes with a booklet with interviews from Oshii

This. It's basically GiTS given the Star Wars Special Edition treatment, taking random effects and replacing them with bad CGI versions.

According to reviews, the dub is fine >inb4 watching dubs but the subtitles are poorly written and often don't make sense (getting gender wrong, not matching dialogue).

>getting gender wrong
They probably mean with the Puppetmaster. There's a new Japanese audio track where they replaced the original male VA with a woman for some fucking reason.

just download the version with original aspect ratio/grain intact. it's on bakabt
those versions are cropped

This. But a good thing about it is the original version is on the disk, so still worth a buy

>Not owning the VHS

you faggot

this

How do I know if it's the 2.0 remaster?

top looks better though

>watching shitty versions when good quality release exist
*tips fedora*

Tell me what do you want to know, i own it

What did he mean by this?

Only in frame comparison
Also objects like the brain are surely better in the 2012 version, but the entire body of motoko in CGI is fucking horrible

theres nothing wrong with this version except the subbing

its not the 2.0 remaster garbage

The CG is more advanced but it doesn't suit the aesthetic at all.

>Oshii considered ruining Patlabor 2 with dated CG
Dodged a bullet on that one.

CGI works better for this aesthetic

Blu-ray com says the 25th anniversary edition isn't scaled to fill the screen, as evident in If you get the 2.0 release it comes with the unaltered original as an extra, I don't think you'll get the same problem.

The issue with that release is that it's a shitty quality Laserdisc scan of the original version. Used to be the best option, but not anymore.

The best version is of an HDTV broadcast, you can find it on BakaBT. It's an ancient encode in WMV, but it's miles better than any Blu-ray offering. The group that added subs to that version (Judgement) is planning a V2 release. Judgement's done a lot of impressive composite releases, worth looking at what else they've done.

Go on BT and get Judgement's version, newfags. The BD is so terrible even a tv rip is better than it.

Christ Almighty, WHY?

Newfags ameridumb like it, just read the comments.

Just kill yourself

What are some other essential cyberpunk series or movies?

lying fuck, I own the blu-ray and have judgement rip, the blu-ray is perfect in terms of visuals, it all comes down to dubs/subs choices, it had the german original dub (not the shitty redub) so it's good to me

You're a hopeless fucktard, the BD is awful, there are lots of sources on the net about the issues, go to the BT page of the encode I posted and you can see direct comparisons and read an in deep explanation in the comments.

Who fucking cares about dubs anyway, they're never a problem.

Refrain from posting if you don't know shit next time, stupid fuck.

show me the sources then nigger, the first reviews this bd got were all saying they put the highest video-quality they got

you lying fuck

here's the BD release

and here the ''judgement release''

>show me the sources
Nigger have you , like, even seen the movie? They used a different ratio, cutting part of the picture, and it looks like shit.

This is the first comment on BT by the uploader.
>just some general comments. niizk v2 preserves a lot more details from the source than the v1 and it should replace our current torrent.

the benefits of my release compared to the BD should be rather obvious, it has better cropping, preserves more of the original grain, is sharper and preserves more details, the same benefits like our 720p torrent. it also has its share of problems too, most noticeable in very fast scenes (example screen 6).

so why should this be accepted alongside the current HDTV rip. my release preserves the original aspect ratio, the 720p release is fucked up. it has a lot less blocking and artifacts and bit less haloing. i suspect that the 720p release might just be a reencode of the RAW i used.

Look at how shit this faithful BD encode is compared to Judgement's encode.

1/2

Too clean and 4 pixels smaller.

Lmao you're a stupid nigger alright.
That's the only scene in the movie that's inferior, simply because a HDTV rip is bitstarved in high action scenes compared to a BD but that's about it, all the rest of the movie is worse.

Compare this still image to get a clear picture of how bad the BD actually is.

2/2

I have to admit I didn't know about the 4 pixel smaller bullshit but still that ''judgment'' encode is pretty shit too considering the low bitrate, ffs is one true is one true definition too much to ask?

>I didn't know about the 4 pixel smaller bullshit
HOW PLEB CAN YOU GET?

While it's shit it's undeniably the best option there is, except for the action scene at the end.
Your BD is garbage, learn to deal with it.

>2017
>didn't watch gits
You're at least 20 years late to the party

OP never said he hadn't seen it already.

Judgment is fucking shit, just watch THORA. You're legitimately dumb if you think Judgment is better.

I've watched it already, I just don't own it and would really like to!

Is that a steelbook? That's way better than what we got in the states.

You might get a chance to pick one of these up in March

Who drew a that?

>first time I watched GitS was the 2.0 version because I didn't know better.
>can't bring myself to watch original version because 2.0 is what I know

I feel so dirty but the audio track is so good

Kilian Eng, it was originally made for a Mondo poster. It's now being sold as the artwork for the Mondo steelbook release

Never heard of Judgement until now but THORA was the my first choice when finally picking a GITS release to archive.

It's to make it more visually similar to Innocence.

You're the dumb one, kid, we already explained why the BD is shit, what do you think THORA's source is?

I can't fucking believe how stupid some people are.
Well you chose wrong.

Was Oshii even involved in the making of 2.0?

I own this.
It's not the 2.0, it's upscale unaltered and looks great. Don't listen to retards or people encouraging you to steal.

This is what a quick search returned.

The 25th anniversary edition does indeed have the original cut of the movie and not the 2.0 with all the CGI and yellow filter crap but it's letterboxed and the video quality is still similar to the old BD making it shit.

Can you people please fuck off with your "there's nothing wrong with the BD!" bullshit? Next we'll have retards defending abominations like this.

Yeah, this one is better than the old one but it's still worse than the fucking HDTV rip, except in action scenes that require more bitrate than usual.

It bugs me very much to find out that formats older than blu-ray have better quality

The problem is the source. They didn't bother to restore the source and added all kind of filters and shit to the encode.

The source for the HDTV was far better.

I'm not an expert, though.
