Is Your Name actually any good...

Is Your Name actually any good? I've been looking up a bunch of shit about it and I'm kind of impressed at how it's surpassed Spirited Away in sales worldwide with the exception of Japan.

It's pretty good, but I don't know why people are losing their collective shit over it

>#1 in the Japanese box office for 13 weeks, 12 weekends
>Has surpassed Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle as #2 Anime Film of All Time in Japan
>Earns 20 billion yen and counting to surpass Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in Japan
>Reached 10 billion yen 9 days faster than Frozen
>Considered for an Oscar
>Wins LA Film Critics Award
>Has become the no. 1 highest-grossing Japanese movie in China
>Has become the no. 1 movie in Thailand
>The film immediately topped Korea's box office opening on 555 screens all around the country which is a new record for the Japanese film.
>Also dominated China breaking the all-time records for the most advance tickets sold and the fastest film to reach 100 million yuan ($ 14 million or 1.7 billion yen), with the first 100 yuan earned in just the film's opening day.
>The film also dominated the charts of Hong Kong and Taiwan becoming the number 2 and top highest grossing Japanese film on the respective countries
>Inexplicably jumps 41% in the Japanese box office and climbs from 7th place to 3rd place in one week
>On the verge of surpassing Spirited Away's worldwide gross, making it the highest grossing anime of all time
>Still in the top 10 in the Japanese box office towards the beginning of 2017
>Now grossed US$331 million.
>Surpasses the box office gross of Spirited Away (US$289.1 million), making it the highest grossing anime film of all time.

So this is meme magic. Not bad.

I didnt like it, its nothing special plotwise or animation wise.

The power of a massive advertising budget more like.

Isn't SA still #1 in Japan? I know YN is only a few million behind but that's actually kind of amazing considering it's only been out for a couple of months now and SA has been out for almost two decades.

It's an overly long "will they or wont they" Friends plot with Sci-Fi tropes and high-school students.
I really liked it, but I tend to be emotional towards such things.

>tfw everyone in the world is losing their shit over this but it still will never be released in my shithole of a country

>Is Your Name actually any good?
well it's not Jack but I like it and don't intend to change it

Kind of just an average anime film of its sort. A step up for Shinkai though.

Making a lot of money doesn't make it a good film.

Spirited Away is just pseudo-Disney trash with even simpler art and less subtle political messages (kinda like most of Miyazaki's films), your name is just Degrassi The Anime with some lame sci-fi shit.

At least SA has interesting character designs

>has interesting character designs
You're right, I love autistic-looking children and monsters that inspired the concept of creepypastas.

No idea if you are being ironic but having something nice and intriguing to look at that is nicely animated is a bonus

if you enjoy protagonists that forget each others names and dont realize they're skipping time, then sure

Who are you kidding? Miyazaki's character designs are boring and uninspired.

It seems like every time he draws a face he purposely makes it seem like all of their facial features are sunken in, almost like their faces are smooth and have no bumps at all. It's creepy.

Im talking about SA specifically and that alone for me puts is above yourname which was plain boring

What is the political message of Spirited Away?

bath house whores suffer a lot

SA monsters* specifically

You're kidding, right? The entire film is a criticism of capitalism.

You burguers see criticism of capitalism in everything

I'm sure Chihiro's parents turning into pigs after driving in with an Audi and credit cards wasn't representing anything,

Thats a Japanese tale where you get cursed into an animal form if you eat uninvited
Try again.

Its like watching two people with Alzheimer try to date.

People who employ child labor are literally witches

Are you actually this delusional?

>Chihiro’s parents turning into pigs symbolizes how some humans become greedy. At the very moment Chihiro says there is something odd about this town, her parents turn into pigs. There were people that “turned into pigs” during Japan’s bubble economy (consumer society) of the 1980s, and these people still haven’t realized they’ve become pigs. Once someone becomes a pig, they don’t return to being human but instead gradually start to have the “body and soul of a pig". These people are the ones saying, ‘We are in a recession and don’t have enough to eat.' This doesn’t just apply to the fantasy world. Perhaps this isn’t a coincidence and the food is actually (an analogy for) "a trap to catch lost humans."

what the shit, why are americans like this
just go away and take all of your fucking genders with you

its based on common jap folklore

KIMI NO ZEN ZEN ZENSE KARA BOKU HA

It's a good mainstream anime to watch with your casual friends

thought there was some stuff about traditional japanese values in there as well, didn't seem to be JUST a criticism of capitalism. At least, that's what my film professor said.

I dunno, I liked it a lot.

Door Puncher produced by Studio Madhouse when

while you're right, your argument is just disproving your point, since the folkore surrounds lessons about greed, of course greed is a common theme under anything that touches on capitalism, but its not meant to be a political agenda, its touching upon lots of myth about japanese culture

stop projecting your shit onto the product, this is the main problem with americans and soccer moms

Well thanks user, now it's going to be stuck in my head the rest of the day.

what was even the criticism? that buying things is stupid and capitalists wanna put price tags on everything? that's the most generic criticism of capitalism ever

I keep remembering that scene where Taki plays basketball in Mitsuha's body and then process to have heart boner.

It's less about that and more about consumption, how capitalism makes us want things that leads us to wanting more and becoming generally insatiable. There are several characters in the film that follow this pattern.

And meanwhile the main character, Chihiro/Sen, ultimately finds fulfillment by abandoning her individuality and subjecting herself to hard labor, which is frankly also kind of a weird message but I guess it plays pretty well in Japan.

What lewd things would Taki do in Mitsuha's body?

Be honest, did you thought that the comet was the one causing the body swap thing?
I actually thought that it was. Especially after the scene where it first broke apart and they never swap again. I thought since it broke, the magic was broken too, or something like that.

To be fair, Miyazaki has actually identified as being a Marxist/Communist in the past.

Now that I think about it his political ideologies in general are just bizarre.

It's neither extremely good nor terribly bad. After seeing it, I had no clue why it's popularity is where it is.

Nothing because Taki is a good boy
Maybe fondles her boobs one time only.

lewd things had been done

I thought that was very obvious??

No, it was pretty obvious from the BGM that it landed on her and she died. What puzzled me was how they'd go about doing that while showing her grown up self at the start of the movie and in the intro.

ah wait, so the body-swap happened for no real reason?

I figured the reason would have turned up after that, there was still plenty of time left for the movie and we had already visited the shrine that would probably have become important later.

It's good maybe shinkai's best so far, not perfect but every kind of fits into place nicely

It's the film Shinkai has been trying to make for years.

soundtrack was spot on and held together a lot of the scenes

Don't fall for the hype.

Don't be blinded by the contrarians.

Expect nothing.

>Don't fall for the hype.
>Don't be blinded by the contrarians.
Do this.
>Expect nothing.
Not really. Watch Garden of words online first, it's less than an hour and you might get a better experience from Your Name afterwards.

Mods still butthurt their bet Koe no Katachi got BTFO by their most hated meme.

I liked it. Definitely has rewatch value.
I love Mitsuha.
care to post the rest? in .zip preferably.

Really makes you think.

>1 Shinkai film BTFO 5 Miyazaki films

Really snaps your synapses.

I want this meme to die

...

Yes, it's a very good film. Hold out for the cinema release if you haven't already seen it though, you'll enjoy it 100x more.

Threadly reminder that Keit-ai is now the highest grossing anime film of all time.

>$331 million

Daily reminder that Keit-Ai is so good it's putting live-action actors out of work.

qz.com/863740/the-massive-success-of-anime-films-like-your-name-is-putting-japans-live-actors-out-of-work/

inb4 wigger wods

"Shinkai films in top 30" total gross:
$331'600'000

"Miyazaki films in top 30" total gross:
$1 billion+

The God of Animation couldn't care less. He's swimming in his yen filled pool like the Scrooge McDick he is right now.

WEW

Threadly reminder that for every Keit-ai post a mod deletes, Kimi no Na wa gets an extra $100,000 on its gross profits.

>1 film by Shinkai BTFO all the films in Miyazaki's career

NICE?

How do people feel about the fact that they're rerecording songs for the Funimation release?

cucked because 5 (FIVE) MONTHS

That actually explains a lot.

>5 more months of Keit-ai spamming

How the hell is Shinkai twitter account not verified yet. Even RADWIMPS got their privilege already.

>Miyazaki's successful films: 10+
>'Literally who guy until late 2016' successful films: 1

There is literally no sense in comparing the greatess of one vs the other guy.
Hell, my fav animated film is 5cm per second and I DO know that I couldn't call it "successful". Your name is more like a One-hit Wonder, if you're still stubborn enough to compare them.

Surely nobody is actually dumb enough to seriously believe there is any relationship between this film and a forced meme on Sup Forums that nobody cares about.

>radwimps recording english versions of their songs for the burger release in 5 months

does Shinkai have an age gap fetish or something

it's average at best if you're not into Sakuga.

Well this means RADWIMPS will get more $ so I think they would be happy but goddamn the English version just doesnt do justice for the movie.

Based from the trailer, the english version seems okay. The only problem is that Mitsuha's voice sounds too young.

hijinks ensues

is miyazaki a cuck

>zen zen zense and zen zen zenbu part ruined
Big problem to me.

Is there a Japanese BD release? Or will that October release will be the only version?

Probably would have been better to go full English on that one.

if age is anything to go by, Keit-ai guy will probably be twice as rich as old man zaki when he's as old.

adjusted to inflation?

um.... no im going to the store to buy more copies.. um good night.

for fuck's sake is there anyone on this board actually knows economics

/e/?

>adjusted to inflation
>when Yen has been in deflation for decades
>when a large chunk of Spirited Away income was from Japan
>when ticket price in Japan stay the same for decades
You can't make a fair comparison anymore.

Unironically, animation character design for both Spirited Away and Your Name were done by Masashi Ando.

Iie senpai, Masayoshi Tanaka (TRDR, HOTD, AnoHana) was the one designs for Your name.

>supervising animator

Tanaka was the Original Character Design, but the one who adapt it to animation is Masashi Ando. They both were credited in Character Design section.
