That is not entirely true. Opinion was divided. Conservatives were against it, but many liberals supported it to the end. William Hazlitt blamed this country for bringing the worst excesses of the Revolution about, by the constant lurking threat of our invasion. If there had been universal opposition in this country to the French Revolution, the government would not have so vehemently had to persecute the opposition and shut down freedom of speech.
