As much as I don't want this to be true, it is. You simply get better results this way, even if the student is a total layabout slacker and miscreant. Students are forced to learn, rather than receive teaching. They are required to engage, not just be present.

This concerns me because social development is what school is actually for. Nobody important learned anything they needed in high school, they learned it on the job or from extracurricular reading. Schools are supposed to teach social behavior and competition, all while keeping the hooligans from being truant and causing mischief.

I worked at an online school that took the absolute dregs from society. They would engage in work for less than an hour per day but still pass their classes and improved their test scores. They spent the rest of the time loitering and causing problems (which we took a lot of negative attention for). It sucks, but it's not like public schools allow for any sort of real social development or competition anyway, so why bother forcing children to sit in a room all day.

Federal government should eat last. Anything I pay to my state government takes burden off the federal. Beyond that, states and localities are better suited to fulfilling the needs of their community that federal governments a thousand miles away.

Every tax paid should reduce income for the purposes of the federal income tax. It shouldn't just be restricted to the schedule A, and this is a step in the right direction, even if it seems to be a step back.

The state some public schools in is just sad and more money for the programs wont save them either. if the students there don't want to learn then it's mostly bleeding money and on the other hand as you said, good students will be able to learn without a lot of expensive books as long as they are not disturbed all the time.

AP classes were always a scam. You could have gotten way more credits in foreign language which you then test out of when you go to college.

Even then, these AP classes represent maybe what, 15 credit hours? Oh boy you busted your ass to get one term ahead in college. Too bad it all has the same terminal conclusion; you either get your degree or fail out. Because of this dynamic, all that extra work and bullshit didn't actually end up teaching you anything OR end up saving you any significant amount of time in the end.

It doesn't matter what you learn in high school because you pick it up as an apprentice or in University. School is a holding tank for otherwise truant children and always has been. The only thing an "advanced" high school education can save you is time, and this is usually just three months of college. It's not enough to get an apprenticeship, and even if you enter an apprenticeship with some training in school you still have to start the program from the beginning, resulting in no time saved.

We have only started to see issues once we started firing the truant officers and allowing kids to not show up. A high school diploma meant one thing "I showed up to class, so I will probably show up to work." It's why a GED is worse even though you have to pass a test to get a GED and have no such requirement for a high school diploma.

Social development can come from being a member of the community and being guided into volunteerism or apprenticeships at a young age. Perhaps even the church, or a secular equivalent, could be a center of social development. As it stands, the average male would be better off learning the value of hard work and a days labor than anything that could be taught in a public school. As for women, they would be better off learning home economics and other pratical skills that could also end up assisting them in the career paths they tend to choose as they mature. I would argue that the social development in high school hinders actual mental development and creates a relatively braindead and cattle-like, malleable population. The old way of raising kids had it's merits, and isn't incompatible with the world we have today thanks to the invention of the internet. People should be taught the value of social hemogony, while also taking to heart the values of absolute mental freedom.

It doesn't matter if you feel they are better off doing volunteerism because there is no practical way to enforce this, nor does it teach children to interface with their community as equals; it teaches them to treat certain folks as the unfortunates.

Members of the community should learn to interface with other members of the community. There is no community-wide meeting place like churches and granges are unfashionable. This is where public schools come in; everyone goes and everyone interfaces with each other.

Russia produced some of histories greatest mathematicians and chemists at periods where they were unable to heat their homes or grow food. Resources available is absolutely secondary when it comes to personal achievement, compared to the cultural value of education.

Smart phones are ubiquitous and every single inner city area is at most a bus ride away from a world class public library. If our education systems were failing a class of people who wanted to be educated, they would be ignoring those systems and educating themselves.
