Oyasumi Punpun

Does this get good at any point? Finished volume 4 and am thinking of dropping it.

If you haven't been able to relate to Punpun at this point, it's not for you, yeah. Oyasumi Punpun is mostly supposed to be an incredibly depressing mirror with some life lessons sprinkled in it.

I hesitate to call them life lessons, it's not like what happens to the characters is described as particularily good or bad. But it's food for thought, anyways.

>If you haven't been able to relate to Punpun at this point, it's not for you, yeah.
False.

>Oyasumi Punpun is mostly supposed to be an incredibly depressing mirror with some life lessons sprinkled in it.
Wrong.

it keeps getting better and doesn't stop getting better for me at least

Stop reading if you are not into by now.

that said, I hated the uncle and his pathetic self-pity the most. Almost more than Aiko's mom.

It's not that I'm not able to relate to it. It's just that I got over it.

Dropped it at volume 4-5, would still reccomemd to anyone if it's up their alley.

You're reading it wrong

If you don't identify even a bit with him, you should stop

Kill yourself

The uncle is the most reasonable and Punpun deserved to live and continue to suffer

>I hated the uncle and his pathetic self-pity the most
He's the only character I liked. Still I didn't like the manga because PunPun came across as the whiny one to me and I couldn't stand Aiko.

not him, but that seems accurate to me. I couldn't relate to Punpun and didn't really get that much out of it. It's not "funny", and the characters/story arcs certainly aren't rewarding or satisfying in any narrative sense.

I can't call it bad by any means, it's just not for me (and people like OP, evidently). But I've never been a fan of memoir-style works, where a troubled author writes their demons out.

No.

No.

Honestly, what Punpun ever do to deserve to suffer. He was a stupid kid growing up, while his uncle was an andult man that should know better.

Shit I really need to read that, but I think I'm already sad enough and I don't want to sink lower because of this manga

Well the uncle did cuck a girl while she was watching from a closet. That's pretty fucking shitty. Didn't she kill herself or something?

it all starts good, aiko was nice but then shit goes full on NTR and depression

Do you like pretentious misery porn? Then yeah it gets good. If not, drop it and read Solanin instead which is the one good thing Asano wrote.

> and read Solanin instead which is the one good thing Asano wrote.

I have vague memories from "It's a wonderful world", but I can't recall if it was worth reading.

Just drop it. Underneath all the crazy visuals and wacky characters, ironically it's biggest fault is that it's too realistic and boring. Identifying with him isn't hard, just that it's... uninteresting,. And you'll get nothing more out of it by the end.

He's right, you know. You should try reading Punpun.

PUNPUN KILLS AIKO'S MOTHER
PUNPUN AND AIKO RUN FROM THE LAW
AIKO COMMITS SUICIDE
SACHI GETS PREGNANT
PEGASUS CULT KILLS THEMSELVES
PUNPUN KILLS GOD
YUUICHI HAS A KID WHO ALSO HAS GOD
HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF

I don't watch anime or read manga like this cause my life is already like that.

>I couldn't stand Aiko.
I felt so fucking relieved when she shat herself to death

>pretentious misery porn
I like how this is a valid genre.

Sup Forums just pretends to like PunPun to troll unsuspecting anons like you into reading trash. It never gets good.

What a Wonderful World is good until like halfway through the second volume when it starts introducing shinigami and some weird unexplained disease that makes people not want to do anything and then ends in a kind of depressing manner.

Solanin's a lot more positive in that regard.

I remember some of his short stories being decent as well.

>too realistic

I've never found myself in a single situation Punpun ended up in except for living in a studio apartment by myself for 4 years. I'd be pretty happy to have some of Punpun's drama to shake things up a bit. Getting raped by my uncle's girlfriend or hate fucking an estranged girl I liked in school sounds nice.

A friend tricked me into it. He sincerely liked it tho and was "devastated" upon reading.

>realistic means it had to happen to you
Not what I meant. Kids get raped by sexually frustrated elders. Emotionally unstable bitches get exploited for sex all the time. Frustrated teens seek whatever chick they can stick their dick into to cope with whatever frustration they have. It needed a relative dying of cancer to tick another one off the list (If that did happen I can't remember anymore). Everyone goes through some drama.
My gripe with all this is that it didn't really go anywhere. It was just ''hey these things happen, now he moved on like everyone else''. That's the badly realistic part. Write these relatable experiences into a good story, don't just throw them in there and add a cool layer of paint. Just going ''I recognize that'' wasn't enough for me.

What are you saying, user? Punpun's uncle was based as fuck. Best character in the manga by far.

Please explain to me what exactly makes him based? I seem to be the only one who doesn't see it. All he ever did was moan.

How can I relate to punpun when he is a non-virgin?

It's been a long time since I've finished the manga so I pretty much don't remember anything at all, but I recall him being the most level-headed one so far.

And it was rather fun to seeing him arguing with himself in his monologues.

>PunPun came across as the whiny one to me

He is though? that's like a huge part of it, a lot of punpun,s troubles are created by his own attitude, perception and personal failings, and not the depressing life events he suffers, though said events do have direct consequences on his personality, especially those of his formative years

Do people not dig character study's? You sound like all the people I've met who hate the Sopranos because there,s not enough murder and vendetta, and too much time with Tony talking to a shrink, or having dream sequences

I love Sopranos but dropped Punpun.

The worst part is the magical hobo band and their fillerish chapters. Mostly evrything else was good.
