I watched the movies in cinemas first, so take my word with a grain of salt, but I think this version is perfectly acceptable for a first viewing unless you're a 1080p whore. It's about the same quality as a HorribleSubs encode for an episode of anime.

I did. It was totally fine on my tv.

I tried to go into it being critical but by the end I loved it anyway. My only real complaint was the crappy cgi for the dancing in the beginning. And some parts felt rushed due to time.

The 480 was decent on my 48 inch tv, and skimming through the 720 rip, it looks to be decent as well.

They never really had a chance, Academy voters only watch cartoons when their friends produce them or their kids want to see them. I doubt Funi has the budget to pull off an actual nationwide ad campaign that would get enough of them to watch it.

I really, really, really want to live in Shinkais version of Japan. I know its almost 1 for 1 with real life (I'm an expat there). But he makes it look really magical somehow.
