Discussion thread for the "political" Video game i'm making.

I've added the faction descriptions, but they are still changeable, so if you have any ideas for jokes or anything to add to any of them, just post below and i'll consider it.

Also, this is a thread for suggestions, so if you have any things you would like to see in the game, feel free to tell me, and if it can be done, i'll try to do it, and if not, i'll explain why.

Also on the itch.io page, i've added a unit sheet, so you can see what the general stats of the units will be, and their special abilities. These are not the final stats and effects, and they will probably change through development if unbalanced or not fun.

I'll lso post some shit i'm still working on and you can comment on it.

i like the concept and the pixel art is great, but i think you should change the ancap leader from trump (why? tbph) to somebody like hans hermann hoppe?

Here is the campaign map I've been working on. It's blocky and weird because it is on a tile grid, and the rivers all flow between the tiles, so it's simple to see if you will be crossing a river, if you are next to the sea, etc.

Although since a campaign map would be a pain in the ass to add, i might save it for a later project, unless I get enough support to think it would be a worthwhile investment of time and resources :/

The colors are the regions controlled by certain states, the rectangles are cities, and the brownish ones are barbarian cities.

this is really nice user. decent amount of units.
still, i honestly think you should drop the 'anarcho' from the faction names, it really doesn't add anything.
they work much better simply as 'communist', 'fascist' and 'capitalist'.
also, have you thought about giving each faction's units a different special, to give each faction a different playstyle? i could add a lot to the 'political' aspect of the game.

Do you need help making any animations or a promo video for it? I can't play it now, cause I'm phoneposting on a work toilet

Also yeah, in the faction description you can read the faction modifiers. Communists get high population growth and cheap units, but they are weaker than other equivalent units, the fascists get lower population growth but better units, and the ancaps get a bonus to economy but a lower stability. The generals of the factions also have different abilities, check out the unit sheet.

It's not out yet, i only started making it a week ago, all I have is a really, really early prototype in Love2d, and i'm still working on the sprites, but shoot me an email and ill tell you when i might need a little help :)

What do you guys say about making the factions: Conservatives(right wing), Ultrafascists(meme), and Socialists(left wing)?

Perhaps 'kekistani', 'kekist' or 'kekistanist' as the meme faction.

Just a suggestion from age of empires: one special unit per faction. Changes play style for each.

Thanks! I'm shooting to make it as user friendly as possible so that everyone can enjoy it. For some reason I could never get into more complitaced strategy games, so this one will be pretty simple (also because i wouldn't want development to take 5 years lol)

Also pic, working on the tilemap for the battle map. It's hard as shit with only 8 colors, but i feel like it makes me more creative. the yellow-red circle thing is a tree BTW XD

You should get rid of Hyde since he's basically a child rapist gone insane that works at Home Depot now. That and he was never really funny aside from the one meme that gets spammed anytime some autist decides to decorate their local church with bullets.

It will be great if you can customize your units with unique abilitys, traits, skills. Also should add special commanders and god forbid, mages.

I don't have the time or resources for that currently :(

Basically it takes place on an earth colony planet after there was some apocalypse and pretty much all the other planets were devoid of humans. This one survived by society collapsed and after a few hundred years the finnish and korean empires rose and fell etc. (Find meme about the finno korean hyperwar's effect on scientific progress, that's the backstory basically) and there are a dozen city states fighting for control, you being one of them. More details in the itch.io page also

Make it as simple as possible to get into the game and keep it fun.

Do the tiles have to be top down? Its easier to make comprehensible graphics with projections like classic RPG maker or Advance Wars

I liked the faction names as Communist, Fascist and Capitalist. There should be at least one unit per faction that's a political philosopher in that field, which is why I like the Max Stirner unit so much.

What games are you basing the gameplay on? The combination of turn based tactics and the sprites really reminds me of Advance Wars and Fire Emblem.

I wasn't inspired by any particular game, but by those youtube channels that make historical videos about ancient battles like historia civilis, bazbattles, kings and generals, etc. Watch them, they are fun and educational

Anyway, I'm off to sleep since it's late here, but feel free to post more suggesrions and stuff as I will read the archived thread in the morning :)

Here is the first concept art I did for it but it was way too much for me, especially the unit and enemy AI, so I simplified it. Might make it into a full game in the future tho. After this one of course ;)

Hey OP, I saw you mention this yesterday, and you talked about LUA. Check out this game if you havent already. It's uses LUA for it's Graphics (tiles version). But it's also got a "terminal version" (it's an old-school UNIX thing). My point is that maybe you might be able to simply modify this game (might save you a lot of overhead time *shrug*) and rearrange it to suit your concept / model. It plays turn-based, it's designed like a kind of electronic board game. I've been toying with the idea of tweaking it for my own personal project for some time. It's already go a few variants, "hellmonk / hellcrawl", being one of them.
If you are interested or looking for something a bit more "complicated" then take a look at:

These are what are called "roguelike" style games. But If you are looking for a model that uses turn-based board-games feel, with events driven after x-number-of-turns, Graphics are now a thing, they are open sourced and easily modifiable. You are simply just tewaking the game mechanics, making new maps, and you already got the graphics worked on. Seems like a logical thing to check out if your are interested.

this is a DOOM roguelike that plays like a RPG. It has classes and utilizes the graphics(tiles) and non-graphics(termimal-ascii) versions. It's pretty good, for an electronic board game / roguelike.
If you do happen to check this out as an option to model against, let me know what you think about it. I look forward to seeing you complete your project.

BTW, the Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup has easy to configure controls. But Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead is experimenting with Z-levels (i.e. multi-floor buildings, and has more complicated things like item crafting and lots of mods that can be toggled on and off.
I'm not sure if there's a way to somehow take the best elements of the two and merge them, but then again you said you wanted to start simply. So I fugure that if possible maybe you can strip down one of these games and then build your own from it and then slowly tweak and add back your own stuff until you get what you are looking for.
All the roguelikes I've seen are based on a square grid map. Both games have a mini map. Cataclaysm:DDA can let you zoom in and out, and supports graphic(tiles) mods sets, so you can pick what you want then characters to looklike by selecting a pre-arranged graphics pack(kinda cool).
I really think this might be something to pick apart since it's already in development actively and it's already working on windows / linux (I play on linux myself). Just by looking at your tileset, I think you jpretty much got the graphics part well figured out. It's the "engine" that you are looking for,and i think a "roguelike" might just be what you are looking for. Most prototypes are able to be done in about 7-days(it's a contest actually 7-day roguelike) and it's ascii-based but you could whip up a quick working model and then translate the tiles onto it. Then you just make your graphics-tilesets.

same thing as above but for an earlier version of the game. Each time they release a new stable version, they change the game mechanics and characters. This is what made me suggest this game in particular, because they are always tewaking out the game mechanics and adding / removing character types + abilities.
Once You figure out your factions / armies, you could possibly add a bit of randomness to the map layouts, perhaps the overall map stays the same but the actual battlegrounds are different everytime you play (basically picked from a stack of pre generated maps / map pieces that are arranged by the game so they aren't exactly the same every gameplay).
FTL is also an example you might wan to look at, a static overall story arc / general map layout, but the plot points are randomized and the encounters are shuffled.

If you make your game modular, then other anons can add new "meme packs / faction /armies" that can be swapped in.
I'm thinking once you get the basic game set up and working, it's could be kinda like MTG where new armies can be designed from fresh memes and added as a type of battlepack. *shrug* I'm just throwing out suggestions here, take from it what you will. I'm not trying to hijack your idea or anything, just my $0.02.
