There are some fundamental issues with paying for other peoples medicine and wellbeing.
One, the state has no money, so the only way to get those money - is through taxing work.
Two, there appear to be no distinct border within what the "government" should pay for, when paying for other peoples need. Food, shelter, medicine, education, all of them can become to expensive to pay if you make an autistic interpretation of what it entails.

Surely the health of children is worthy of the governments money.

Is every childs health and wellbeing worthy of government money? Would a child living in relative poverty be entitled to a better home?
My point is, there is no apparent limit. You could always find teary examples of why the government should pay for X and Y, but they are taking the money from tax payers - reducing the financial incentive to work, furthermore if the workers can get everything else they need from the government without having to go to their shitty-jobs - why wouldn't they then just quite their job and be provided for by the state? as long as they have a child, then the health and wellbeing of the child, and its family would be the states responsibility.

This would make kimmel a victim and give him endless ratings.

As much as it sucks, the health of a child is the parent's responsibility. If the parents have the responsibility of feeding it, raising it, sheltering it, clothing it, and keeping it healthy. If you're saying 'the government's money', you mean 'my money' and every taxpayer's money.

Not to mention the government has to put reasonable limits on what it will PAY for your medicine, thus it tells doctors and hospitals what a procedure can cost. So it becomes less profitable to preform the procedures so they slowly become too expensive to recoup cost on and are no longer covered on your gubbment insurance.

Drug companies and the like cant recoup the costs on development of drugs, devices and procedures so medical advancement slows or stops.

Single payer sound great at first when your healthcare is the best in the world, but it wont stay there for long once you bankrupt it. Within 10 - 15 years your state of the art, kick ass healthcare will be third world, long wait times, drug shortages....you know Canada or the Veterans Administration.
