Slavery is the wrong word for modern society because by definition we are not slaves, you are absolutely free to just be homeless. Modern society is more like a prison or a cattle farm in that we don't get to choose where we live anymore. Subsistence farming is actually pretty hard. It's not just the food - a low percentage of where you spend money. You will have to create the tools and work without consuming a lot of chemicals and energy or utilities, too.

If the work you do is less hard overall, then you are actually benefitting. There should be more CHOICE for how to live though: If people are just put under a program then it's no surprise they wont value it and will have a poor attitude towards that system.

This brings us to another point, where the powerful want to retain you as a serf. If you're not smart enough then you will continue being their serf - "voluntarily"
