From what I know from several accounts of my parents and several relatives, that he was a pretty alright leader. He made lots of infrastructure and helped bring order to the Philippines. The country was doing pretty well economically. After EDSA and Marcos' exile, that was when things went really south and Filipinos started to go out of the country for work.
However, further discussions of him revealed to me that he had to borrow a lot of money to make all that infrastructure. I also heard that the world transitioned away from the gold economy, which is why the Philippines is left in the mud.
